View full detailsBare root Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is one of the finest native hedge plants for creating a dense, formal or informal hedge at an affordable price. Supplied during the dormant season without soil around its roots, bare root Hornbeam offers excellent value and establishes quickly when planted between November and March.
Often mistaken for Beech, Hornbeam has beautifully ribbed green leaves that turn rich golden-yellow in autumn before fading to warm copper-brown. Many of the dried leaves remain on the branches throughout winter, providing valuable screening until fresh foliage emerges in spring.
Ideal for gardens, estates, paddocks and boundary planting, Hornbeam is exceptionally hardy and copes well with heavy clay soils where Beech may struggle.
Hornbeam is one of the UK's most reliable native hedge plants.

For best establishment:
Good aftercare during the first year is key to establishing a healthy, vigorous hedge.
Hornbeam responds exceptionally well to clipping.
For the best results:
Regular trimming produces a thick, attractive hedge from ground level upwards.
Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a native deciduous tree widely grown as a hedging plant. It forms a dense, attractive hedge with fresh green leaves in spring and summer, golden autumn colour and copper-brown leaves that often remain through winter.
Bare root Hornbeam should be planted between November and March while the plants are dormant and the ground is neither frozen nor waterlogged.
Both make excellent hedges, but Hornbeam is generally the better choice for heavy clay soils and wetter conditions. It also retains many of its brown leaves throughout winter, providing useful seasonal screening.
Hornbeam has a moderate to fast growth rate, typically producing 30–60cm of growth per year once established, depending on soil conditions and maintenance.
Hornbeam is deciduous, but when grown as a hedge it often retains many of its dried copper-brown leaves throughout winter before fresh green foliage emerges in spring.
Bare root Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is one of the best-value hedging plants available for creating a dense, attractive and long-lasting boundary. Hardy, easy to grow and well suited to UK conditions, it is particularly effective on heavier soils where many other hedge plants struggle.
