Bare Root Hornbeam Hedging (Carpinus betulus)

Bare Root Hornbeam Hedging for Strong, Native & Cost-Effective Winter Planting

Bare root Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is one of the finest native hedge plants for creating a dense, formal or informal hedge at an affordable price. Supplied during the dormant season without soil around its roots, bare root Hornbeam offers excellent value and establishes quickly when planted between November and March.

Often mistaken for Beech, Hornbeam has beautifully ribbed green leaves that turn rich golden-yellow in autumn before fading to warm copper-brown. Many of the dried leaves remain on the branches throughout winter, providing valuable screening until fresh foliage emerges in spring.

Ideal for gardens, estates, paddocks and boundary planting, Hornbeam is exceptionally hardy and copes well with heavy clay soils where Beech may struggle.

Why Choose Bare Root Hornbeam Hedging?

Hornbeam is one of the UK's most reliable native hedge plants.

Benefits include:

  • Excellent value for large hedging projects
  • Native British species
  • Dense, formal or informal hedge
  • Attractive green summer foliage
  • Golden autumn colour followed by copper-brown winter leaves
  • Retains many leaves through winter for seasonal screening
  • Thrives on heavy clay soils
  • Hardy and easy to establish

Its neat appearance and tolerance of regular trimming make it equally suitable for formal gardens and natural boundaries.

Available Season

Bare root Hornbeam is available during the dormant planting season.

Typically available from:

  • November
  • December
  • January
  • February
  • March (while stocks last)

Ordering early helps secure the freshest field-lifted plants before peak demand.

Where to Plant Bare Root Hornbeam

Hornbeam is incredibly adaptable and suitable for:

  • Formal hedges
  • Garden boundaries
  • Privacy screening
  • Driveway planting
  • Rural boundaries
  • Parks and estates
  • Windbreaks

It grows well in both full sun and partial shade.

Soil Requirements

One of Hornbeam's greatest strengths is its adaptability.

It thrives in:

  • Clay soils
  • Loam
  • Chalk
  • Moist but well-drained soils
  • Heavy soils

Unlike Beech, Hornbeam performs particularly well on heavier ground where drainage is slower.

Planting Bare Root Hornbeam

Bare root Hornbeam should be planted as soon as possible after delivery.

For best results:

  • Keep roots moist until planting.
  • Dig a trench or individual planting holes wide enough to spread the roots naturally.
  • Position each plant so the previous soil mark sits level with the surrounding ground.
  • Backfill with the excavated soil and firm well around the roots.
  • Water thoroughly after planting, even during winter if conditions are dry.
  • Apply a mulch around the base to help conserve moisture and reduce weed competition.

Avoid allowing the roots to dry out before planting, as this can significantly reduce establishment success.

Watering & Aftercare

Although planted during winter, Hornbeam still requires regular attention during its first growing season.

For best establishment:

  • Water thoroughly after planting.
  • Continue watering during dry spells throughout spring and summer.
  • Keep a weed-free area around the base of the hedge.
  • Apply mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil structure.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if required.

Good aftercare during the first year is key to establishing a healthy, vigorous hedge.

Pruning Hornbeam Hedging

Hornbeam responds exceptionally well to clipping.

For the best results:

  • Trim once or twice each year to maintain a dense hedge.
  • Formal hedges are usually clipped in late summer.
  • Young plants benefit from light formative pruning to encourage bushier growth.
  • Remove any damaged or crossing branches as required.

Regular trimming produces a thick, attractive hedge from ground level upwards.

Bare Root Hornbeam Hedging FAQs

What is Hornbeam?

Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a native deciduous tree widely grown as a hedging plant. It forms a dense, attractive hedge with fresh green leaves in spring and summer, golden autumn colour and copper-brown leaves that often remain through winter.

When can bare root Hornbeam be planted?

Bare root Hornbeam should be planted between November and March while the plants are dormant and the ground is neither frozen nor waterlogged.

Is Hornbeam better than Beech?

Both make excellent hedges, but Hornbeam is generally the better choice for heavy clay soils and wetter conditions. It also retains many of its brown leaves throughout winter, providing useful seasonal screening.

How quickly does Hornbeam grow?

Hornbeam has a moderate to fast growth rate, typically producing 30–60cm of growth per year once established, depending on soil conditions and maintenance.

Does Hornbeam lose its leaves?

Hornbeam is deciduous, but when grown as a hedge it often retains many of its dried copper-brown leaves throughout winter before fresh green foliage emerges in spring.
