Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) – A Tough, Versatile Evergreen Shrub for Year-Round Structure

Prunus laurocerasus, commonly known as Cherry Laurel, is one of Britain's most widely planted and reliable evergreen shrubs. With its bold, glossy foliage, vigorous constitution, and remarkable adaptability, it earns its place in gardens large and small — whether grown as a dense privacy hedge, a windbreak, a specimen shrub, or a shade-tolerant ground cover beneath taller trees.

Fast-growing and unfussy about position, Cherry Laurel rewards with interest across all seasons: bright new growth flushes in spring alongside sweetly scented white flower spikes, dark wildlife-friendly berries follow in autumn, and the rich, leathery evergreen foliage holds its handsome appearance through even the harshest winter months.

Key Features

  • Vigorous, fast-growing evergreen shrub with large, lustrous dark-green leaves

  • Outstanding year-round screening, suitable for formal hedges or informal planting

  • Fragrant white flower spikes in spring, followed by dark fruits attractive to birds

  • Exceptionally shade-tolerant — one of the few vigorous evergreens to thrive beneath tree canopy

  • Tolerates a wide range of soils, urban pollution, and exposed positions

  • Responds well to clipping or can be left to develop naturally as a specimen

Growing Conditions

Position: Prunus laurocerasus is among the most accommodating of all hardy evergreen shrubs when it comes to aspect. It thrives in full sun, partial shade, or deep shade, making it an excellent choice for north-facing boundaries, wooded gardens, or shaded corners where many other plants struggle to perform.

Soil: Tolerant of most soil types including clay, chalk, loam, and sandy soils, provided the ground is reasonably well-drained. Cherry Laurel prefers a moist, fertile growing medium but copes well in drier conditions once fully established. Avoid sites prone to prolonged waterlogging, which can cause root health issues over time.

Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK and across most of Northern Europe, withstanding heavy frosts and cold winds without significant damage to foliage or structure.

Habit & Appearance

Foliage: The leaves are large, leathery, and a deep, lustrous mid- to dark-green — bold and eye-catching in any planting scheme. New growth emerges in a fresh lime-green before maturing to the characteristic rich tone, providing a pleasing seasonal contrast throughout the growing year.

Flowers & Fruit: In mid to late spring, Cherry Laurel produces upright, candle-like racemes of small, creamy-white flowers carrying a delicate, sweet fragrance — a feature that often surprises those who regard it purely as a structural plant. These are followed in late summer and autumn by clusters of small fruits that ripen from red to deep purple-black, providing a valuable food source for birds and other wildlife.

Ultimate Size: Without pruning, Cherry Laurel will develop into a large, wide-spreading shrub or small multi-stemmed tree, capable of reaching 5–8m in height with a similar spread over many years. Annual growth of 30–60cm is typical in good conditions. It responds readily to pruning and can be maintained at almost any desired height.

Care & Pruning

Watering: Water regularly throughout the first growing season to encourage a strong, well-established root system. Once settled, Cherry Laurel is notably drought-resilient and requires very little supplementary watering in typical UK conditions.

Feeding: Apply a balanced, general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous, healthy growth — particularly beneficial in poorer or sandy soils. An annual mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base will help conserve moisture, improve soil condition, and reduce weed competition.

Pruning: For a formal hedge or screen, trim once or twice annually — ideally in late spring after the main flush of growth and again in late summer if a second tidy is required. Where possible, use secateurs rather than powered shears to avoid cutting cleanly through the large leaves, which can leave unsightly brown edges at the cut surface. As a free-growing specimen or informal shrub, Cherry Laurel needs very little attention — simply remove any crossing, damaged, or misplaced branches in late spring to maintain an open, well-balanced framework.

Pests & Disease: Generally robust and trouble-free. The most commonly encountered issue is shot hole disease — a fungal condition that causes small brown spots and holes to develop in the leaves. While it can look alarming, it is largely cosmetic and rarely threatens the long-term health of an otherwise well-grown plant. Improving air circulation through light pruning and avoiding overhead watering can help reduce its occurrence.

Hardworking, handsome, and remarkably easy to grow, Cherry Laurel is a true garden stalwart — delivering bold structure, reliable privacy, and year-round evergreen colour with very little in return.
