Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) – A Tough, Versatile Evergreen for Year-Round Structure and Privacy

Prunus laurocerasus, commonly known as Cherry Laurel, is one of Britain's most widely planted and trusted evergreen shrubs. Celebrated for its bold, glossy foliage, vigorous growth, and remarkable adaptability, it is a first-choice plant for gardeners seeking reliable screening, dense hedging, or a substantial structural presence in the landscape — with minimal fuss.

Hardy, fast-growing, and tolerant of conditions that would challenge many other plants, Cherry Laurel earns its reputation as a workhorse of the garden. In spring it adds seasonal charm with fragrant upright white flower spikes, followed by dark, berry-like fruits that provide a welcome food source for visiting birds. Whether clipped to a crisp formal hedge or allowed to develop its natural, spreading form, it is a plant of enduring value throughout the year.

Key Features

  • Vigorous, fast-growing evergreen with large, rich, glossy green leaves

  • Outstanding for year-round privacy hedging, screening, and windbreaks

  • Fragrant white flower spikes in spring, followed by wildlife-friendly dark fruits in autumn

  • Highly tolerant of shade, pollution, exposed sites, and a wide range of soils

  • Equally suited to formal clipped hedges or relaxed, naturalistic planting

  • Fully hardy throughout the UK and across Northern Europe

Habit & Appearance

Foliage: The leaves of Cherry Laurel are among the most striking of any hardy evergreen — large, leathery, and a deep, lustrous green. New growth emerges in fresh lime-green flushes during the growing season, providing a pleasing contrast against the mature foliage and adding subtle seasonal interest even outside of the flowering period.

Flowers & Fruit: In mid to late spring, Cherry Laurel produces erect racemes of small, sweetly scented white flowers — an often-underappreciated display that brightens the plant considerably. These are followed in autumn by clusters of small, cherry-like fruits that ripen from red to deep purple-black, eagerly sought by blackbirds and other wildlife. Note that the fruits are toxic if ingested by humans.

Ultimate Size: Left to grow unpruned, Cherry Laurel will ultimately develop into a large, broadly spreading shrub or small multi-stemmed tree, capable of reaching 5–6m in height with a spread of 3–4m or more. In good growing conditions, annual growth of 30–60cm is typical. With regular pruning it can be maintained at virtually any desired size, making it as useful in a modest garden as it is across a large estate.

Growing Conditions

Position: One of Cherry Laurel's greatest strengths is its flexibility in aspect. It grows well in full sun, partial shade, or full shade — including beneath the canopy of established trees — making it suitable for north-facing boundaries, wooded gardens, and urban plots where light may be limited.

Soil: Highly adaptable across a broad range of soil types, including clay, chalk, loam, and sandy ground. It performs best in a moist, moderately fertile, well-drained soil, but will tolerate drier conditions once established. Avoid planting in permanently waterlogged ground, as this can lead to root stress and poor establishment.

Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK and tolerant of hard frosts without significant damage. It also copes well with coastal exposure and urban air pollution, further broadening its range of suitable planting environments.

Care & Pruning

Watering: During the first growing season, water regularly to support strong establishment and encourage deep rooting. Once settled in, Cherry Laurel is notably resilient and copes well with dry spells, requiring little supplementary watering under typical UK conditions.

Feeding: Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring to promote vigorous, healthy growth, particularly in leaner soils. An annual mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base will help retain soil moisture, improve fertility, and suppress competing weeds.

Pruning: For use as a formal hedge or clipped screen, prune once or twice a year — ideally in late spring after flowering and again in late summer if a second trim is needed to keep it tidy. Where possible, use sharp secateurs rather than mechanical shears to avoid cutting through the broad leaves, which can leave unsightly brown edges at the cut surface. When grown as a free-standing specimen or informal screen, very little pruning is needed — simply remove any awkward, crossing, or damaged branches in late spring to maintain a pleasing open structure.

Pests & Disease: Cherry Laurel is generally robust and trouble-free. It may occasionally show signs of shot hole disease — a fungal condition that causes small, circular holes in the leaves — but this is largely cosmetic and rarely causes lasting harm to a well-established plant. Good airflow around the shrub and avoiding overhead watering can help minimise the risk.

From fast-establishing hedges to bold specimen plantings, Cherry Laurel is a dependable, handsome evergreen that brings structure, privacy, and year-round presence to

Guide to Planting Field-Grown Root Balled Plants

Pros:

  1. Established Roots: Typically stronger, established roots ensure better initial growth.
  2. Immediate Impact: Larger plants provide instant structure and aesthetics.

Cons:

  1. Heavy and Bulky: Can be difficult to transport and plant due to size and weight.
  2. Seasonal Availability: Generally available only in the dormant season (autumn to early spring).

Preparation for Planting:

  1. Unwrap Carefully: Remove any packaging material, but leave the burlap or wire basket on.
  2. Keep plants moist: Plants should be kept moist until the time of planting.

Planting Process:

  1. Dig a Hole: Make a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  2. Position Plant: Place the root ball in the hole, ensuring the top is level with the ground surface.
  3. Do Not Remove Root Sack: Leave the burlap or wire basket around the root ball. It is bio degradable and will rot away naturally.
  4. Backfill: Fill the hole with soil, firming gently around the roots to eliminate air pockets.
  5. Water: Water deeply after planting to settle the soil and avoid wilting.

Possibility of Losses:

  • Initial Shock: Some plants may suffer transplant shock, leading to potential losses.
  • Mitigation: Proper care and consistent watering during the establishment phase can minimise this risk.

Main Causes of Failure:

  1. Improper Planting Depth: Planting too deep or too shallow can stress the roots.
  2. Poor Soil Conditions: Compacted or poorly drained soil can hinder root growth.
  3. Insufficient Watering: Both under-watering and over-watering can lead to plant stress and failure. Strong wind can dry leafy pants.
  4. Pest and Disease: Lack of protection and monitoring can result in damage from pests and diseases.

Tips for Success:

  1. Stake Larger Plants: Support with stakes to prevent wind damage.
  2. Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate temperature.
  3. Regular Monitoring: Check for signs of stress, pests, and disease, and address them promptly.

By following these guidelines and providing consistent aftercare, you can successfully plant and establish field-grown root balled plants in your garden.
