Phormium ‘Red Sensation’ – Bold Structure with Striking Burgundy Foliage
Phormium ‘Red Sensation’ is a dramatic, evergreen perennial prized for its bold, upright form and deep burgundy-red foliage. A standout among New Zealand Flax cultivars, this variety delivers year-round architectural interest with its sword-shaped leaves that bring rich colour and structure to gardens. Its contemporary, sculptural presence makes it a favourite for modern landscapes, coastal gardens, and large containers.
Seasonal Beauty & Growth
Spring:
-
In early spring, ‘Red Sensation’ sends up strong, vertical leaves in rich shades of red-maroon and deep wine, creating an instant focal point.
-
The glossy foliage catches the light, enhancing its bold colouring and bringing warmth to the emerging spring garden.
Summer:
-
During summer, the foliage deepens in colour, maintaining its upright, fan-like habit.
-
In hot, sunny conditions, the red hues become more intense and saturated, and mature plants may produce tall flower spikes with tubular, reddish flowers that attract pollinators.
Autumn:
-
The plant maintains its strong form and colour through autumn, providing contrast to softer seasonal hues and seedheads.
-
It pairs beautifully with golden grasses and late-flowering perennials for a striking seasonal display.
Winter:
-
In mild climates, ‘Red Sensation’ remains fully evergreen, offering structure and bold foliage even in the depths of winter.
-
In colder zones, the outer leaves may suffer from frost, but protection or mulching can help preserve the plant, which regrows in spring.
