Magnolia loebneri ‘Merrill’ – Star Magnolia with Pure White Blooms

Magnolia loebneri ‘Merrill’ is one of the finest star magnolias, admired for its spectacular display of pure white, star-shaped flowers in early spring. Each bloom is lightly scented and appears in abundance on bare branches before the foliage emerges, creating a breathtaking seasonal display. Compact, hardy, and reliable, it is perfect for gardens of all sizes, including smaller spaces.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Masses of fragrant, star-shaped white flowers open in March–April, often before the leaves.

  • Summer: Fresh green foliage provides a soft, leafy canopy.

  • Autumn: Leaves fade to yellow before dropping.

  • Winter: Bare branches display flower buds that promise the next spring show.

Key Features

  • Early-flowering – One of the first magnolias to bloom, brightening the garden after winter.

  • Fragrant white flowers – Large, star-shaped blooms with a light perfume.

  • Compact habit – Typically 3–5m tall, suitable for smaller gardens.

  • Hardy and reliable – More frost-resistant than many magnolias.

  • Low maintenance – Easy to grow with little care required.

Perfect For

  • Specimen planting – Stunning as a feature tree for lawns or courtyards.

  • Borders and beds – Adds elegance and seasonal colour to mixed planting schemes.

  • Woodland gardens – Thrives in lightly shaded, sheltered settings.

  • Smaller gardens – Compact size makes it easy to fit into tighter spaces.

Growing Tips

  • Sun/Position: Best in full sun to light dappled shade; shelter from cold winds.

  • Soil: Moist, fertile, well-drained soil, neutral to slightly acidic.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK.

  • Care: Requires little pruning; simply remove dead or crossing branches after flowering. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and protect shallow roots.

Looks Great With

  • Spring bulbs – Snowdrops, Daffodils, or Tulips beneath extend early colour.

  • Other magnolias – Pair with pink or yellow forms for staggered displays.

  • Acers (Japanese Maples) – Provide fiery autumn foliage.

  • Evergreens – Camellias or Hollies give year-round structure.

Magnolia loebneri ‘Merrill’ is a graceful, hardy magnolia that delivers an unforgettable spring display of starry white flowers. Compact, low-maintenance, and fragrant, it’s a superb choice for gardens of all sizes, from courtyards to woodland-style plantings.
