Prunus 'Spire' is an elegant, upright cherry tree with stunning pale pink spring blossoms, attractive bronze-red young foliage, and a striking narrow form. It's ideal for UK gardens, especially where space is limited, due to its columnar shape and moderate size. With its year-round appeal—from spring flowers to autumn color—it’s a great choice for both small and large gardens.
Its elegant, columnar shape makes Prunus 'Spire' an excellent choice for a focal point in small gardens or narrow spaces where height is needed without taking up too much ground space. Due to its compact size and upright habit, it's ideal for urban environments, including small front gardens, courtyards, or lining pathways. A perfect addition to formal gardens or landscapes where seasonal interest is a priority.
-
Flowers: Single flowers, typical of wild cherry species. Soft pale pink flowers that fade to white as they mature. Blooms in April, creating a spectacular display as the tree is often covered with blossoms before the leaves emerge. Lightly scented, adding a subtle fragrance to the garden in spring.
-
Foliage: New leaves emerge in a bronze-red color, adding early-season interest alongside the pink flowers. The foliage turns a deep green, providing a lush, healthy canopy. In autumn, the leaves turn golden-yellow to orange, offering a brilliant seasonal display before they fall.
-
Size: A medium-sized tree, typically growing to about 7-10 meters (23-33 feet) in height but with a narrow spread of about 2.5-3.5 meters (8-12 feet), making it ideal for narrow spaces
-
Bark is smooth, with a reddish-brown color and horizontal lenticels (markings), similar to many cherry species. This feature adds winter interest when the tree is bare..
- After flowering, the tree may produce small, dark cherry-like fruits in early summer. While the fruits are not particularly ornamental, they can attract birds and other wildlife to the garden.
Prunus Spire prefers full sun for optimal growth and flowering. Grows well in well-drained soils and is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including loam, clay, and sandy soils. Low maintenance, requiring little pruning. Any pruning should be done in summer after flowering, remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches to maintain a healthy structure. Minimal pruning is needed due to the naturally tidy, upright form of the tree.
