Exochorda macrantha, commonly known as the Pearl Bush, is a beautiful deciduous shrub that captivates with its abundant display of pure white flowers in spring. Known for its striking, arching branches and cascading clusters of large, pearl-like blossoms, this shrub brings an elegant touch to any garden. With its graceful form and early bloom time, ‘Exochorda macrantha’ provides a stunning focal point for borders, hedges, or even as a specimen plant in larger garden spaces.
Why Grow Exochorda macrantha?
Beautiful White Blossoms – The plant's most notable feature is its mass of pure white flowers, which bloom in late spring, often before the leaves appear. These flowers create an eye-catching, delicate display that adds freshness to the garden.
Graceful, Arching Form – With its gently arching branches and wide spread, Exochorda macrantha provides a soft, flowing structure, making it perfect for borders or as a statement plant in a sunny garden.
Hardy & Low-Maintenance – Fully hardy and easy to grow, Exochorda macrantha requires minimal care. It is resistant to pests and diseases and thrives in a variety of well-drained soil types.
Early Blooming – As one of the first shrubs to bloom in spring, the Pearl Bush offers much-needed colour and interest after the winter months, providing an early burst of freshness in the garden.
Planting & Care Guide
Position – Prefers full sun to partial shade. In sunnier spots, the flowers will be more abundant, but it can tolerate some light shade as well.
Soil – Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is adaptable to various soil types, including slightly alkaline conditions.
Watering – Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, Exochorda macrantha is relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering during particularly dry spells.
Maintenance:
- Prune lightly after flowering to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged wood.
- Remove spent flowers to encourage a tidy appearance and avoid unwanted seed production.
- Mulch in spring to retain moisture and keep the soil cool.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Exochorda macrantha pairs beautifully with other spring-flowering plants, such as Tulips, Crocus, or Daffodils, which bloom around the same time. Its pure white flowers contrast elegantly with the soft pastels of Rhododendrons or Peonies. The graceful form of Exochorda macrantha works well with low-growing groundcovers like Heuchera or Sedum, adding both structure and softness to the planting scheme. For a stunning effect, combine it with vibrant shrubs like Spirea or Forsythia, which bloom later in spring, to extend the season of interest.
Height & Spread – Exochorda macrantha typically grows to a height of 1.5–2.5 metres (5–8 feet) and has a spread of 1.5–2.5 metres (5–8 feet), making it a substantial shrub that provides excellent coverage and a beautiful focal point in the landscape.
Does the height include the pot?
No, we measure from the top of the pot to the tip of the plant except for some of the instant planted screens, in this case it will be stated in the description
