The Taxus baccata Cone, shaped from the classic English Yew, offers a striking, upright silhouette with dense, dark green foliage. Its formal, conical shape adds vertical interest and architectural structure to garden spaces year-round. Ideal for formal layouts, entranceways, topiary displays, and container planting, this evergreen topiary brings enduring beauty with very little upkeep.
Spring:
Fresh, soft green new growth emerges, creating subtle contrast against mature darker foliage.
Spring is the perfect time for a light trim to maintain the coneβs crisp shape.
Summer:
Rich, deep green colour holds well through warm months.
Adds structure and height to borders or parterres, with excellent drought tolerance once established.
Autumn:
Foliage stays neat and lush, with occasional red arils (berries) appearing on mature, untrimmed plants.
A valuable evergreen highlight in mixed plantings.
Winter:
Maintains form and colour throughout cold months, offering strong winter structure when most plants recede.
Withstands frost, wind, and even heavy snow.
Height & Spread: Typically maintained between 60β150cm tall, depending on age and pruning style. Spread is proportionally narrower for a slim, formal shape.
Form: Upright, conical shape with tightly clipped, compact growth.
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate. Shape holds well, requiring only one or two trims per year.
Position: Thrives in full sun to deep shade β one of the most adaptable evergreens.
Soil: Tolerant of a wide range, including chalk, clay, and loam. Prefers well-drained soil. Avoid poorly drained or waterlogged sites.
Maintenance: Clip once or twice a year (late spring and/or late summer) to maintain shape. Minimal ongoing care needed.
Hardiness: Fully hardy (H7), highly tolerant of frost, urban pollution, and exposed sites.
Formal Gardens & Parterres: Adds vertical structure and contrast to lower planting or hedging.
Entrances & Driveways: Makes an impressive statement flanking doorways, steps, or gates.
Topiary Displays: Combine with balls, spirals or cubes for a sophisticated garden design.
Containers: Ideal for pots where vertical structure is needed without spreading bulk.
