Planting & Care Guide
Position: Nandina domestica 'Obsessed' thrives in full sun to partial shade. It performs best in a sunny location but can tolerate some shade, especially in hotter climates.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. 'Obsessed' is adaptable to a variety of soil types but thrives best in fertile, moist soil.
Watering: Water regularly when newly planted to establish strong roots. Once established, this shrub is fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry spells to keep the foliage looking vibrant.
Maintenance:
Pruning – Nandina 'Obsessed' generally requires little pruning but can be trimmed in early spring to shape the plant or remove any dead or damaged wood. This helps maintain its compact form.
Mulching helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots during colder months. A light mulch layer in the fall can help keep the plant's roots insulated during winter.
Fertilizing is not usually necessary unless the soil is nutrient-poor. If desired, a light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring will encourage healthy growth and improve the overall appearance of the plant.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Nandina domestica 'Obsessed' pairs beautifully with other shrubs and perennials, such as Heuchera, Hosta, and Astilbe, where its vibrant foliage provides contrast with the softer textures of other plants. It also works well with deciduous shrubs like Spiraea or Abelia, enhancing the garden with a pop of year-round color. For a more dramatic effect, pair it with ornamental grasses like Miscanthus or Pennisetum, where the fine-textured leaves of 'Obsessed' complement the taller, bolder forms of grasses.
