Box Hedging (Buxus sempervirens) – 30/40cm Bare Root

Classic Evergreen Bordering for Structure and Style

Buxus sempervirens, or Common Box, is one of the most popular and dependable evergreen hedging plants for creating crisp, low borders. Supplied at 30–40cm tall as bare root plants, this is an excellent size for establishing neat hedges quickly while remaining cost-effective for larger planting schemes.

Ideal for formal parterres, edging pathways, or defining garden spaces, this slow-growing shrub offers year-round structure and timeless appeal.

Key Features

  • Height at delivery: 30–40cm (approx. 12–16 inches)

  • Form: Young, bushy bare root plants with well-developed roots

  • Foliage: Dense, small, glossy green leaves held throughout the year

  • Growth Rate: Slow – 10–15cm per year

  • Mature Hedge Height: Perfect for 40–60cm low hedges

  • Root Type: Bare root – cost-effective and ideal for mass planting

Perfect For

  • Formal knot gardens and clipped low hedging

  • Border edging in flowerbeds, vegetable gardens or driveways

  • Box ball or cone topiary bases

  • Traditional, contemporary, and minimalist designs alike

Growing & Care

  • Position: Full sun to full shade – very tolerant

  • Soil: Fertile, free-draining soil; avoid prolonged wet conditions

  • Spacing: Plant 4–5 per metre for a dense, low hedge

  • Watering: Keep consistently moist during the first year

  • Pruning: Clip once or twice annually to keep tidy and compact

  • Feeding: Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring

Why Choose 30/40cm Bare Root Box Hedging?

  • Great size for fast establishment without breaking the budget

  • Dense evergreen foliage provides year-round form and colour

  • Suitable for planting in sun or shade

  • The ideal choice for creating neat lines and borders in classic designs

  • Bare root format is easy to handle, quick to plant, and economical

Pros:

  1. Cost-Effective: Bare root plants are generally cheaper than potted plants.
  2. Variety: Greater selection of species available.
  3. Establishment: Often establish quickly in the garden.

Cons:

  1. Timing: Must be planted during the dormant season (late autumn to early spring).
  2. Initial Care: Require careful handling and timely planting.

Preparation for Planting:

  1. Soak Roots: Immerse the roots in water for a few hours before planting to rehydrate them.
  2. Inspect: Trim any damaged roots with clean, sharp scissors.
  3. Dig Hole: Ensure the hole is wide enough to spread roots out without bending them.
  4. Consider Cutting back: Cutting back by up to 1/3, especially on taller plants will reduce possible losses and improve plant establishment.

Planting Process:

  1. Plant Depth: Plant at the same depth they were grown in the nursery, indicated by the soil mark on the stem.
  2. Fill Hole: Backfill with soil, ensuring no air pockets around the roots.
  3. Water: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.

Possibility of Losses:

  • Adjustment Period: Some plants may not survive the transition due to transplant shock or poor initial care.
  • Mitigation: Proper planting techniques and aftercare, like regular watering and mulching, can reduce losses.

Aftercare Tips:

  1. Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the establishment period.
  2. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  3. Protection: Protect young plants from extreme weather and pests.

Bare root planting is a straightforward, economical way to enhance your garden, provided you follow these essential steps to ensure successful establishment.
