Prunus lusitanica ‘Brenelia’ – Compact Portuguese Laurel with Rich Evergreen Foliage
Prunus lusitanica ‘Brenelia’ is a refined and compact form of Portuguese Laurel, valued for its dense habit, glossy foliage, and distinctive red stems. The dark green leaves are smaller and neater than common Cherry Laurel, giving this variety a more elegant and structured appearance.
In early summer, slender sprays of creamy white flowers rise above the foliage, lightly fragrant and attractive to pollinators. These are often followed by small dark berries, adding subtle seasonal interest and supporting garden wildlife.
‘Brenelia’ forms a naturally dense, upright shrub that responds exceptionally well to clipping, making it ideal for formal hedging, topiary, and structured planting schemes. Its tidy growth and rich evergreen colour provide year-round screening and definition without the coarser look of larger-leaved laurels.
Hardy and dependable, Portuguese Laurel thrives in sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Once established, it is tolerant of urban conditions, wind, and coastal exposure, making it a versatile and reliable choice for UK gardens.
Elegant, resilient, and easy to maintain, Prunus lusitanica ‘Brenelia’ is an excellent alternative to traditional laurel for gardeners seeking a more refined evergreen hedge.
