Euonymus alatus ‘Compactus’ – The Dwarf Burning Bush
Euonymus alatus ‘Compactus’ is a compact, deciduous shrub that earns its common name, “Burning Bush,” from its extraordinary autumn display. Through spring and summer, it forms a tidy dome of deep green leaves, supported by distinctive corky winged stems that add subtle texture to the garden.
As the days shorten and temperatures cool, this unassuming plant bursts into a blaze of colour, with foliage transforming into shades of fiery crimson, scarlet, and magenta. Even after the leaves fall, the sculptural winter silhouette and textured stems maintain visual interest.
Its slow, dense growth makes it ideal for small gardens, mixed borders, low hedging, or as a focal point in a seasonal display. Incredibly hardy and easy to grow, it thrives in a wide range of soils and requires very little attention once established.
