Euonymus japonicus ‘Aurea’
Cheerful, bright, and evergreen, Euonymus japonicus ‘Aurea’ is a versatile shrub that brings year-round colour and structure to the garden. Its glossy leaves are boldly splashed with golden yellow, creating a lively contrast against the deep green background. This natural variegation gives the plant a glowing, sunlit effect even on the dullest winter days.
Dense and upright in habit, ‘Aurea’ makes a smart hedging shrub, an excellent specimen for containers, or a colourful evergreen presence in mixed borders. Its golden foliage brightens shaded corners, adds warmth to green-heavy plantings, and can be clipped neatly to give formality and structure where needed. Left more informally, it will grow into a handsome, bushy shrub that shines in every season.
One of its greatest strengths is adaptability. Euonymus japonicus ‘Aurea’ is hardy, reliable, and tolerant of coastal exposure, pollution, and a wide range of soil types, making it equally at home in town, country, or seaside gardens. Its evergreen foliage provides a steady backdrop for seasonal flowers and perennials, while its golden highlights ensure it is never overlooked.
Design-wise, it pairs beautifully with darker foliage plants, making its colours pop. Use it as a hedge, plant it in groups for a splash of brightness, or grow it in pots to lift patios and courtyards with its year-round vibrancy.
