Carpinus betulus – Timeless Strength and Versatility

Carpinus betulus, known as the European Hornbeam, is a traditional, long-lived tree valued for its strength, resilience, and classic beauty. It is widely planted in both formal and natural landscapes thanks to its adaptability and ease of care.

In spring, ribbed, bright green leaves emerge, forming a dense, leafy canopy. Through summer, the foliage provides excellent shade and screening. In autumn, the leaves turn warm golden yellow, often persisting into winter in hedges where they add texture and shelter. The grey bark and fine, fluted trunk bring quiet interest year-round.

Why Choose Carpinus betulus?

Reliable & Resilient – Hardy, long-lived, and tolerant of varied conditions.
Seasonal Beauty – Fresh green spring growth, golden autumn colour.
Versatile – Perfect for hedging, screens, avenues, or as a specimen tree.
Wildlife Friendly – Provides food and shelter for birds and insects.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Adaptable — thrives in loam, clay, or chalk; prefers moist but well-drained soil.

Watering: Keep well-watered during establishment; tolerates short dry periods once mature.

Feeding: Mulch in spring with organic matter to encourage vigour.

Pruning: Responds well to pruning — ideal for clipped hedges and formal shapes; prune in late winter or midsummer.

Design & Planting Ideas

Plant as a majestic avenue tree in larger landscapes.
Clip into formal hedges or screens for gardens and estates.
Use as a specimen tree in mixed borders or parkland.
Combine with flowering shrubs for seasonal contrasts.
