Hydrangea macrophylla 'Endless Summer Blue' – Reblooming Bigleaf Hydrangea with Vivid Blue Mophead Flowers

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Endless Summer Blue' is a truly remarkable deciduous shrub and a genuine game-changer in the world of hydrangeas. Unlike traditional bigleaf hydrangeas that bloom only once on the previous year's wood, 'Endless Summer Blue' has the exceptional ability to flower on both old and new growth — delivering a prolonged, repeat display of large, rounded mophead blooms from late spring right through to the first frosts of autumn.

The flowers themselves are a showstopper: wide, domed clusters packed with florets in shades that range from rich cornflower blue through to lilac-pink, depending on the acidity of your soil. Set against broad, glossy, deep green leaves, the blooms create a lush, classic cottage-garden spectacle that is hard to beat. The plant forms a well-rounded, bushy habit, making it equally at home in a border or a generously sized container.

Why Choose Hydrangea macrophylla 'Endless Summer Blue'?

  • Reblooms All Season Long – Flowers on both old and new wood for an extended display from late spring to autumn.

  • Stunning Colour Flexibility – Blooms turn deep blue in acidic soils or soft pink-lilac in alkaline conditions.

  • Classic Mophead Form – Large, full flower clusters bring timeless cottage-garden charm.

  • Lush, Bold Foliage – Rich, glossy green leaves provide a handsome backdrop to the blooms.

  • Versatile Garden Plant – Suitable for borders, specimen planting, and containers alike.

Seasonal Interest

Spring: Fresh, bright green foliage unfurls and the first buds begin to form on overwintered stems, setting the stage for early blooms.

Summer: The main flowering display gets underway with large, rounded mophead clusters that keep coming as new growth continues to set buds — a defining feature of the 'Endless Summer' series.

Autumn: Blooming continues well into autumn. As temperatures drop, the flower clusters take on antique, parchment-toned hues, adding a softer seasonal beauty before the leaves fall.

Winter: The dried flowerheads can be left on the plant through winter to provide structure and a degree of frost protection for the buds below, before being removed in spring.

Growing Conditions

Position: Best suited to a sheltered spot in partial shade, particularly where it receives morning sun and afternoon shade. In cooler regions it can tolerate more sun, but protection from harsh midday sun and drying winds helps the blooms last longer and prevents wilting.

Soil: Thrives in moist, fertile, well-drained soil enriched with plenty of organic matter. Soil pH has a direct impact on flower colour — acidic soils (pH 5.5 and below) produce the richest blue tones, while alkaline or neutral soils shift the blooms towards pink and lilac. To encourage or maintain blue flowers, apply a specialist ericaceous or hydrangea bluing feed and choose an ericaceous planting mix where relevant.

Hardiness: Reasonably hardy once established, though late frosts can damage emerging buds. In colder or exposed gardens, provide a protective mulch around the base in autumn and consider a light fleece covering during sharp frosts to safeguard the overwintering buds that carry the early-season flowers.

Care & Pruning

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during warm, dry spells. Bigleaf hydrangeas are particularly prone to wilting in heat and drought, so regular deep watering is essential. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture.

Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth and generous flowering. For blue blooms, supplement with a hydrangea bluing tonic or ericaceous feed throughout the growing season.

Pruning: Because 'Endless Summer Blue' blooms on both old and new wood, pruning should be approached with care. In late winter or early spring, remove only dead, damaged, or crossing stems and lightly tidy the shape — avoid cutting back hard, as this will sacrifice the early flower buds on old wood. Deadhead spent blooms through the season to encourage the plant to redirect energy into new flowering growth.

Design & Planting Ideas

  • Plant in sheltered cottage or woodland-style borders where the blue blooms create a cool, romantic mood alongside ferns, hostas, and astilbes.

  • Use as a statement specimen shrub in a focal bed or alongside a garden path or entrance.

  • Combine with white or cream flowering plants such as white agapanthus or Hydrangea paniculata for a fresh, elegant contrast.

  • Excellent for cut flowers — harvest blooms at their peak and bring the display indoors, or dry them for long-lasting arrangements.

  • Grow in a large container on a shaded terrace or patio, using an ericaceous compost to maximise the intensity of the blue flower colour.
