Hibiscus syriacus 'Oiseau Bleu', commonly known as Rose of Sharon, is a stunning deciduous shrub celebrated for its large, lavender-blue flowers with a deep crimson eye at the centre. Blooming prolifically from late summer into autumn, it fills the garden with exotic-looking colour at a time when many other shrubs have long finished flowering. Upright and tidy in habit, 'Oiseau Bleu' — meaning "Blue Bird" in French — is a refined choice for borders, courtyard gardens and feature planting, combining easy care with a truly eye-catching display.
Habit and appearance
Growth form: 'Oiseau Bleu' forms an upright, vase-shaped deciduous shrub with an elegant, slightly columnar habit. The mid-green foliage is deeply lobed and provides an attractive backdrop throughout the growing season before the plant comes into its spectacular late-season flowering display.
Flowers: The blooms are large, single, trumpet-shaped and a distinctive soft lavender-blue — an unusually cool tone for a hibiscus — each adorned with a bold, deep red-purple central eye. Flowers are produced in great abundance over an extended period from mid summer through to autumn, making this one of the longest-flowering shrubs available for temperate gardens.
Growing conditions
Aspect and position: Plant in a full sun position for the best flowering performance. 'Oiseau Bleu' thrives in warm, sheltered spots and is an excellent choice for south- or west-facing borders. It will tolerate partial shade, though flowering may be reduced. In cooler climates, a warm wall or sheltered courtyard position will encourage the most prolific blooms.
Soil: Prefers a fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It will adapt to most reasonable garden soils, including moderately sandy or clay-based conditions, provided drainage is adequate. Avoid permanently waterlogged ground. Incorporate organic matter at planting time to improve soil structure and moisture retention.
Hardiness: Rose of Sharon is fully hardy in most temperate climates and tolerates cold winters well once established. Young plants may benefit from a light mulch over the root zone during their first winter.
Care
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong root system. Once established, Hibiscus syriacus is reasonably drought tolerant, though consistent moisture during dry spells during summer will support the best flowering performance.
Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring as new growth begins. A feed with a potassium-rich fertiliser in early summer can help promote abundant flowering. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leafy growth at the expense of blooms.
Pruning: Pruning is straightforward and helps maintain a tidy shape and encourages vigorous flowering. In early to mid spring, once the risk of frost has passed and new buds begin to swell, cut back the previous year's stems by roughly one-third to one-half. Harder pruning will result in fewer but larger flowers; lighter pruning will produce a greater number of blooms. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches entirely. Avoid pruning in autumn or winter as this can expose the plant to frost damage.
General maintenance: 'Oiseau Bleu' is a low-maintenance shrub with good resistance to most common pests and diseases. Deadheading spent flowers is not necessary but can keep the plant looking neat. A layer of mulch applied around the base in spring will help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
