Planting & Care Guide
Position – Prefers full sun to partial shade. It grows well in sunny borders, specimen tree positions, or woodland gardens, where its beautiful flowers and foliage can be showcased.
Soil – Thrives in well-drained, rich, and moist soil. Slightly acidic to neutral soil conditions are ideal, although the tree can tolerate a range of soil types, as long as they are not waterlogged.
Watering – Water regularly, particularly during dry spells, to maintain consistent moisture in the soil. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but will benefit from additional watering in prolonged dry conditions.
Maintenance:
-
Pruning – Prune after flowering to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Pruning helps maintain the tree’s shape and encourages a healthy, well-balanced form.
-
Mulching – Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the roots cool during summer heat.
-
Fertilizing – Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth, improve flowering, and encourage strong fruiting.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Cornus kousa ‘Wieting’s Select’ pairs beautifully with other flowering trees such as Magnolia, Cherry Blossom, or Crabapple, which complement its delicate spring flowers. For stunning autumn colour contrasts, combine it with shrubs like Hydrangea paniculata or Spiraea that offer contrasting foliage. Underplant with shade-loving perennials such as Hostas, Astilbes, or Heucheras, which will thrive in the partial shade the tree provides and create a beautiful, layered effect. This tree’s refined flowers, attractive fruits, and exceptional fall colour will provide beauty and interest throughout the seasons.
