Cornus Kousa Wieting's Select

Kousa Dogwood

Cornus kousa ‘Wieting’s Select’ (Kousa Dogwood) – A Refined Tree with Stunning Flowers and Exceptional Fall Colour

Cornus kousa ‘Wieting’s Select’, commonly known as Kousa Dogwood, is a refined and exceptional variety of the popular Kousa Dogwood tree. Known for its elegant, large, white bracts that surround small, yellowish flowers in late spring, this tree offers a brilliant display of colour. In addition to its beautiful flowers, it produces vibrant red, berry-like fruits in late summer, followed by striking red and purple foliage in the autumn. Growing to a height of 4.5–7 meters (15–23 feet) with a similar spread, Cornus kousa ‘Wieting’s Select’ is perfect for smaller to medium-sized gardens where its graceful form and seasonal displays can be appreciated year-round.

Why Grow Cornus kousa ‘Wieting’s Select’ (Kousa Dogwood)?

Large, Elegant Flowers – The white bracts, which surround small, star-like flowers, create a stunning and refined floral display that lasts for weeks in late spring to early summer.

Vibrant Autumn Colours – In the fall, the leaves turn deep red and purple, adding exceptional colour to the landscape and extending the tree’s visual appeal into the cooler months.

Compact & Hardy – Reaching a height of 4.5–7 meters (15–23 feet), this variety is ideal for smaller gardens and provides a dramatic yet manageable focal point.

Bird-Friendly Fruits – The small, red fruits produced in late summer attract birds and other wildlife, making this tree a great addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Low-Maintenance – Cornus kousa ‘Wieting’s Select’ is a hardy, low-maintenance tree that requires minimal care, making it perfect for gardeners who want beauty without excessive upkeep.

Planting & Care Guide

Position – Prefers full sun to partial shade. It grows well in sunny borders, specimen tree positions, or woodland gardens, where its beautiful flowers and foliage can be showcased.

Soil – Thrives in well-drained, rich, and moist soil. Slightly acidic to neutral soil conditions are ideal, although the tree can tolerate a range of soil types, as long as they are not waterlogged.

Watering – Water regularly, particularly during dry spells, to maintain consistent moisture in the soil. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but will benefit from additional watering in prolonged dry conditions.

Maintenance:

  • Pruning – Prune after flowering to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Pruning helps maintain the tree’s shape and encourages a healthy, well-balanced form.
  • Mulching – Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the roots cool during summer heat.
  • Fertilizing – Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth, improve flowering, and encourage strong fruiting.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Cornus kousa ‘Wieting’s Select’ pairs beautifully with other flowering trees such as Magnolia, Cherry Blossom, or Crabapple, which complement its delicate spring flowers. For stunning autumn colour contrasts, combine it with shrubs like Hydrangea paniculata or Spiraea that offer contrasting foliage. Underplant with shade-loving perennials such as Hostas, Astilbes, or Heucheras, which will thrive in the partial shade the tree provides and create a beautiful, layered effect. This tree’s refined flowers, attractive fruits, and exceptional fall colour will provide beauty and interest throughout the seasons.
