Cotinus coggygria Lilla

Smoke Bush

Cotinus coggygria ‘Lilla’ – Compact Smokebush with Vivid Colour and Dramatic Texture

Cotinus coggygria ‘Lilla’ is a stunning compact smokebush prized for its vibrant foliage, dramatic summer flower plumes, and manageable size. A refined alternative to larger Cotinus varieties, ‘Lilla’ delivers the same bold colour and soft, smoky texture in a form perfect for smaller gardens, borders, or containers.

With fiery seasonal colour changes and a neat, rounded habit, ‘Lilla’ is a true statement shrub that brings drama and beauty from spring through autumn.

Why Grow Cotinus ‘Lilla’?

1. Striking Foliage Colour
New leaves emerge orange-red in spring, maturing to rich wine-red and purple tones through summer, then glowing scarlet, copper, and crimson in autumn.

2. Dramatic “Smoky” Plumes
Airy, cloud-like clusters of pinkish flower panicles in summer create the signature “smoke bush” effect, adding lightness and movement to borders.

3. Compact & Garden-Friendly
Unlike larger Cotinus varieties, ‘Lilla’ grows to a neat 1–1.5 m tall and wide, making it ideal for smaller gardens, mixed borders, and containers.

4. Seasonal Interest All Year
From vivid spring foliage and summer plumes to blazing autumn colour and graceful winter structure, ‘Lilla’ changes beautifully with the seasons.

5. Easy-Care & Hardy
Tough, low-maintenance, and fully hardy, ‘Lilla’ thrives with minimal pruning and is resilient in a range of soil and climate conditions.

How to Grow Cotinus ‘Lilla’

Position:
Best in full sun for the richest foliage colour and best flowering. Tolerates light partial shade.

Soil:
Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid heavy, waterlogged ground.

Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant and low-maintenance.

Pruning:
Minimal pruning needed. Remove dead or damaged wood in late winter or early spring. Can be cut back hard to rejuvenate foliage if desired.

Growth Habit:
A compact, rounded deciduous shrub reaching 1–1.5 m tall and wide. Slow to moderate growth rate.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy across the UK (H5). Tolerates frost, wind, and urban conditions.

Design Ideas

  • Use as a focal point in small gardens or mixed borders.

  • Combine with ornamental grasses or pale flowering perennials to highlight its dark foliage.

  • Plant in containers for dramatic seasonal colour on patios or terraces.

  • Pair with golden-leaved shrubs for striking colour contrast.

Final Thought

With its intense foliage, signature smoky plumes, and compact size, Cotinus coggygria ‘Lilla’ brings dramatic colour and texture to gardens of any size. Low-maintenance yet high-impact, it’s a superb choice for adding vibrant, ever-changing beauty from spring through autumn.
