Cherry Laurel

Identifiable by their glossy leaves and ability to produce flowers and fruits, Cherry Laurels are a beautiful addition to any garden. Alongside attractiveness, their fast growth, density and minimal maintenance make them ideal for year-round hedging.

There are many different Cherry Laurel plants, each with their own unique properties and your purpose will determine the type required. At Grasslands, our dedicated horticulturalists especially grow hedging plants, including Laurel hedges, Leylandii hedges and Privet hedges. Each of our hedging plants can be selected in varying sizes- making them perfect for low borders or to ensure privacy at up to 3.5 metres high.

What is the difference between Cherry Laurel and Laurel Hedging?

Cherry Laurels are part of the genus Prunus, which includes foliage such as Prunus Laurocerasus (also referred to as English Laurel or Cherry Laurel) and Prunus Caroliniana (known as Carolina Cherry Laurel). Laurel hedging is the umbrella term for any hedging plant that is part of the Laurel family. Cherry Laurels are, therefore, a type of Laurel Hedging.

What are the different types of Cherry Laurel?

  • Cherry Laurel Etna (4.5L Pot): Ideal for smaller gardens, this Cherry Laurel stands 80-90cm tall and grows slowly (20-40cm per year), requiring minimal pruning. Its shorter height allows more light to reach your garden, helping other plants thrive. Suitable for various soils and can tolerate shade. Plant 2-3 per meter for a dense hedge.
  • Cherry Laurel Hedging (40L Pot): Perfect for instant screening, this Laurel is 180-200cm tall and 50-60cm wide. With glossy, evergreen leaves, it grows quickly (30-60cm per year). Thrives in normal, chalk, and clay soils without direct sunlight. Plant 2 per meter for immediate coverage.
  • Laurel Hedging Elly (110L Pot): This 225cm tall Cherry Laurel is pre-trimmed for a neat, instant screen. It has a compact, slower growth rate, reaching up to 300cm if untrimmed. Ideal for formal hedges, its uniform shape saves you time on maintenance.

Where to Site your Cherry Laurel

Cherry Laurel thrives in moist, well-drained soil but can also adapt to poorer, shallow, or chalky soils. It’s tolerant of cold, exposed sites, heavy clay, and full shade. For optimal health, apply a general-purpose feed like chicken pellets or bone meal twice a year.

Growth

Cherry Laurel Hedging can reach heights of up to 8 meters, with an annual growth rate of 30-50cm. Its moderate growth rate makes it easy to manage and prune without becoming unruly.

For a healthier, more vibrant hedge, consider removing any berries and flowers. This allows the plant to direct its energy towards producing lush, green foliage rather than decorative elements. However, this is optional and based on your preference.

Caring Tips for your Cherry Laurel
Watering Cherry Laurel
  • Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the establishment phase and in dry weather. Cherry Laurel is relatively drought-tolerant once established, but regular watering is essential in dry periods to maintain its lush foliage. Water deeply to ensure moisture reaches the roots rather than just wetting the surface.
Pruning Cherry Laurel
  • Prune Cherry Laurel to maintain its shape and encourage dense growth. Throughout the year, remove any weak, dead, or damaged branches using sharp secateurs or loppers. For formal hedges or screens, trim regularly to preserve the desired form and promote healthy, bushy growth. Pruning also helps improve air circulation, reducing the risk of disease.
Feeding Cherry Laurel
  • Feed Cherry Laurel in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy growth. This provides essential nutrients that support vibrant foliage and strong root development.
Signs of Pests and Disease: How to Care for Your Cherry Laurel
Root Rot
  • Caused by poor drainage, root rot results in brown, mushy roots and can lead to the plant's decline. To prevent this, ensure the soil is well-drained and avoid overwatering.
Shot Hole Disease
  • This fungal disease causes small holes in the leaves, leading to a ragged appearance. Control measures include pruning affected areas and using fungicidal sprays as a preventative measure.
Leaf Spot
  • This fungal disease results in small, dark spots on the leaves, leading to premature leaf drop. To manage this, ensure proper air circulation and avoid overhead watering. Fungicidal treatments can help reduce the spread.
