View full detailsCherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) is one of the UK's most popular evergreen hedging plants, valued for its large glossy leaves, vigorous growth and ability to create a dense, year-round screen. Whether you're looking to improve privacy, reduce noise or define a garden boundary, Cherry Laurel is a reliable and attractive choice.
Unlike bare root or rootball hedging, our pot-grown Cherry Laurel is supplied with a well-established root system, allowing it to be planted throughout the year whenever ground conditions are suitable.
Available in a wide range of sizes, Cherry Laurel is ideal for everything from small domestic gardens to commercial landscaping and large estate planting.
Pot-grown Cherry Laurel offers complete planting flexibility and is an excellent option if you're planting outside the traditional autumn and winter hedging season.
Each plant is grown in its own container, helping minimise root disturbance and encouraging quicker establishment.
Benefits include:
With the correct planting and aftercare, Cherry Laurel quickly develops into a thick, attractive hedge that provides year-round structure and privacy.
Cherry Laurel is renowned for producing one of the fastest and densest evergreen hedges available.
Its large, glossy green leaves provide excellent screening throughout the year, while its naturally bushy growth responds well to clipping, allowing it to be maintained at almost any height or width.
Cherry Laurel is perfect for:
Established plants may also produce upright clusters of fragrant white flowers during spring, followed by small dark berries later in the year, adding seasonal interest to the hedge.
Cherry Laurel is available in a wide range of sizes to suit every project.
Smaller plants offer outstanding value and establish quickly, making them ideal for longer hedge runs.
Larger specimens provide more immediate impact and screening, making them perfect for creating instant privacy in established gardens.
Whichever size you choose, regular watering during the first growing season is the key to successful establishment.
Cherry Laurel can be planted throughout the year provided the ground is not frozen, waterlogged or excessively dry.
Thoroughly soak the rootball before removing the plant from its pot.
Remove weeds and dig a planting hole approximately twice the width of the rootball, loosening the surrounding soil.
Position the top of the rootball level with the surrounding soil. Avoid planting too deeply or covering the stem with excess soil.
Refill with the excavated soil and gently firm around the rootball to remove air pockets.
Water deeply immediately after planting and continue watering regularly until the plants are fully established.
Spacing depends on the size of plant and how quickly you'd like the hedge to fill out.
As a general guide:
Refer to the individual product page for specific spacing recommendations.
Cherry Laurel is extremely adaptable and performs well in most garden conditions.
Suitable for:
It thrives in:
Avoid permanently waterlogged soils.
Consistent watering is the single most important factor during the first growing season.
The entire rootball should be soaked thoroughly rather than watered little and often. During prolonged dry weather, larger plants may require several buckets of water each time.
We recommend:
Once established, Cherry Laurel becomes relatively drought tolerant.
Cherry Laurel generally requires very little feeding if planted into fertile soil.
If required, apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser during spring once the plants have become established.
Avoid feeding drought-stressed or newly planted hedging until it has settled into active growth.
Cherry Laurel responds exceptionally well to pruning and can be maintained as either a neat formal hedge or a more natural evergreen screen.
For best results:
Regular trimming encourages dense growth from the base upwards.
Pot-grown Cherry Laurel can be planted throughout the year whenever the ground is workable and not frozen or waterlogged.
Yes. Cherry Laurel retains its glossy green foliage throughout the year, providing permanent screening and privacy.

Yes. Cherry Laurel grows well in both full sun and partial shade, making it suitable for a wide variety of gardens.
Water thoroughly immediately after planting and continue to give the plants a deep soak during dry weather throughout their first growing season.
A small amount of yellowing on older leaves is perfectly normal. More widespread yellowing may indicate watering issues, poor drainage or transplant stress.
Cherry Laurel will tolerate many coastal locations but performs best where it has some protection from strong salt-laden winds.
Yes. It responds extremely well to clipping and can be maintained as a neat formal hedge or allowed to develop into a more natural evergreen screen.
No. The berries, leaves and all other parts of the plant should not be eaten and should be kept away from children and pets.
