Bare root Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) offers a cost-effective way to establish a dense, glossy evergreen hedge. Field-grown and supplied without pots or compost during the dormant season, these plants are ideal for longer hedge runs, garden boundaries and larger landscaping projects.
Cherry Laurel is one of the UK’s most popular hedging plants because of its vigorous growth, large evergreen leaves and excellent screening ability. Once established, it forms a thick, attractive hedge that provides privacy, shelter and year-round structure.
Bare root Cherry Laurel is generally available between November and March, subject to suitable lifting conditions and stock availability.
Bare root Cherry Laurel combines the screening qualities of a popular evergreen hedge with the savings available from winter planting.
Benefits include:
With regular trimming, Cherry Laurel develops into a dense and manageable hedge.
Bare root Cherry Laurel is lifted and supplied while dormant, normally between:
Availability can be more limited than with deciduous bare root hedging, so ordering early is recommended—particularly for larger quantities and taller grades.
Cherry Laurel is a versatile choice for:
It grows successfully in full sun or partial shade. It can also tolerate deeper shade, although growth may be slower and less dense.
Cherry Laurel adapts to most ordinary garden soils, including:
Avoid permanently waterlogged areas. On heavy ground, prepare a wide planting area and loosen the surrounding soil so water can drain and new roots can extend beyond the original planting trench.
Cherry Laurel also performs well in exposed positions once established, although newly planted hedging may require temporary support.
Bare root plants should be planted as soon as possible after delivery.
Never allow the exposed roots to dry out. Keep them covered and moist until planting. If planting must be delayed, temporarily heel the plants into loose soil.
Remove grass, weeds and debris from the planting area. Dig a trench or individual holes wide enough to accommodate the roots without forcing or bending them upwards.
Loosen compacted soil at the sides of the trench to encourage outward root growth.
Plant each Cherry Laurel at the same depth it was growing in the field. The previous soil mark should sit level with the surrounding ground.
Spread the roots naturally before replacing the soil.
Backfill using the excavated soil, firming carefully around the roots to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.
Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and reduce competition from weeds and grass, keeping it slightly clear of the stems.
Bare root Cherry Laurel requires consistent care throughout its first growing season.
For successful establishment:
Evergreen leaves continue to lose moisture even when the plant is establishing. This means Cherry Laurel can dry out more quickly than deciduous bare root hedging, particularly during warm, breezy weather.
Deep watering directly around the roots is more effective than frequent light watering of the surface.
Do not place strong fertiliser directly against bare roots when planting.
Once fresh growth begins in spring, a balanced slow-release fertiliser can be applied if required. An annual mulch of garden compost or well-rotted organic matter will also improve the soil gradually.
Feeding cannot compensate for insufficient watering, so moisture should remain the priority during establishment.
Cherry Laurel responds well to regular pruning and quickly becomes dense.
For the best results:
Cherry Laurel can tolerate harder renovation pruning once established, although newly planted hedges should be allowed time to develop their root systems.
Bare root Cherry Laurel is normally planted between November and March, while dormant and provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
Yes. Cherry Laurel retains its large glossy leaves throughout the year, providing continuous privacy and screening.
Once established, Cherry Laurel can commonly produce around 30–60cm of growth per year, depending on the soil, position, watering and maintenance.
Yes. Because it is evergreen, Cherry Laurel continues to lose moisture through its leaves. Regular deep watering during the first spring and summer is therefore especially important.
Yes. Cherry Laurel grows in full sun, partial shade and more heavily shaded positions, although it may grow more slowly in deep shade.
Bare root plants rely on correct storage, planting and aftercare. As establishment is affected by weather, soil conditions and watering, bare root hedging is supplied without guarantee.
Bare root Cherry Laurel offers an economical way to create a substantial evergreen hedge with excellent year-round privacy. Its glossy foliage, vigorous growth and adaptability make it suitable for domestic boundaries, larger gardens and commercial landscaping schemes.
Order your bare root Cherry Laurel hedging during the winter planting season and provide consistent deep watering through its first spring and summer to encourage strong establishment and healthy growth.
