Cercis or Redbud

Cercis, commonly known as redbud, is a stunning deciduous tree or shrub admired for its unique blossoms, attractive foliage, and year-round interest.

Stunning Spring Flowers:

Produces clusters of small, pea-shaped flowers that bloom directly on branches (a phenomenon called cauliflory).

Flowers appear in shades of pink, purple, or white, creating a striking display before the leaves emerge.

Flowers are an early nectar source for bees and pollinators.

 Attractive Foliage:

Heart-shaped leaves in vibrant green, deep purple, or golden hues depending on the variety.

Many varieties offer excellent autumn color, with leaves turning yellow, orange, or red.

Compact and Versatile:

Ideal for small to medium gardens due to its modest size (typically reaching 3–8 meters).

Can be grown as a specimen tree, in borders, or even as a multi-stemmed shrub.

Where to Site Your Cercis

  • Use as a focal point in the garden due to its distinctive flowers and form.
  • Plant in mixed borders with spring bulbs for complementary textures and colors.
  • Combine with evergreens or grasses for year-round interest.
  • Works well as part of a wildlife garden or pollinator-friendly planting scheme.

How to Grow and Look After you Cercis

They thrive in deep, moist soil, favour a sun spot out of strong winds. At the beginning of the season mulch the tree to keep it cool in the summer to protect it from winter frosts.

If required, cercis can be pruned to remove any misplaced branches; this will maintain the shrubs symmetry and keep it in good condition.
