Campsis × tagliabuana 'Golden Trumpeter' is a spectacular deciduous climber that brings a bold, tropical feel to any sunny wall, fence or pergola. Its pinnate, deep green foliage forms a lush backdrop for the showstopping display of large, flared trumpet-shaped flowers in a rich golden-yellow, produced abundantly from midsummer through to early autumn. A vigorous and self-clinging grower, this stunning trumpet vine is a magnet for nectar-seeking insects and adds dramatic vertical interest to gardens of all styles.
Growing conditions
Position: Plant in a warm, sunny and sheltered spot for the best flowering performance. Full sun encourages the most prolific blooms, though the plant will tolerate a lightly shaded aspect. A south- or west-facing wall, fence or sturdy pergola is ideal, as the reflected warmth also helps ripen the stems and protect the plant over winter.
Soil: Grows best in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It is adaptable to a range of soil types, including loam, clay and sandy soils, provided drainage is reasonable. Incorporate well-rotted organic matter at planting to help retain moisture and encourage strong establishment. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Hardiness: Fully hardy in most parts of the UK once established, though young plants may benefit from some fleece protection during their first winter. The roots are generally more cold-tolerant than the top growth, and plants will reshoot vigorously from the base even if top growth is cut back by frost.
Habit & appearance
Growth: A vigorous, deciduous, self-clinging climber that attaches itself to surfaces using aerial rootlets. It builds in size and flowering potential year on year, eventually creating a substantial, woody framework clothed in attractive pinnate foliage. The golden-yellow trumpet flowers are large and eye-catching, flaring outward at the mouth and borne in generous clusters at the shoot tips throughout the summer and into autumn.
Wildlife value: The vivid, nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bumblebees, solitary bees and other pollinating insects. In warmer climates the blooms also attract hummingbirds, making this a superb choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
Care
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong root system. Once settled, trumpet vine is reasonably drought-tolerant, though a thorough watering during prolonged dry spells in summer will support flowering and healthy foliage.
Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring as growth begins. Avoid excessive high-nitrogen feeds, which can encourage lush leafy growth at the expense of flowers. A feed higher in potassium, such as a tomato fertiliser, applied during the growing season can help promote a better flower display.
Pruning: Campsis flowers on the current season's growth, making it straightforward to manage. In late winter or early spring, cut back all the previous year's side shoots to two or three buds from the main framework, similar to the approach used for wisteria. This keeps the plant tidy, encourages strong flowering shoots and prevents it from becoming too woody and unruly. Remove any frost-damaged growth at the same time. Established plants can also be lightly tidied after flowering if needed.
Support: Although the plant produces aerial rootlets that allow it to self-cling to rough surfaces such as brick and timber, it will benefit from some initial guidance and tying in to wires or a trellis while young. On smooth surfaces, providing a framework of horizontal wires will give the plant the support it needs to develop a strong, even coverage.
