Campsis × tagliabuana 'Ebony and Red' is a spectacular deciduous climbing vine that brings bold, tropical drama to any garden. This outstanding trumpet vine is celebrated for its extraordinary combination of rich, near-black foliage and vivid scarlet-orange trumpet-shaped flowers, creating a striking contrast that is virtually unmatched among flowering climbers. Vigorous and long-blooming, 'Ebony and Red' produces its dazzling floral display from mid-summer well into autumn, attracting hummingbirds, honeyeaters and other nectar-feeding wildlife in abundance.

Habit and appearance

A bold and vigorous climber. 'Ebony and Red' is a strong, woody, self-clinging vine that attaches itself to structures using aerial rootlets. The deeply divided, pinnate foliage emerges with a striking dark bronze-purple hue that deepens to a near-black tone as the season progresses, setting a dramatic backdrop for the large clusters of flared, trumpet-shaped flowers. Blooms are produced in terminal clusters and are a luminous scarlet to orange-red, providing an electrifying colour contrast against the dark leaves throughout the warmer months.

Growing conditions

Position. Plant 'Ebony and Red' in a full sun position to achieve the best flower production and the most intense dark foliage colouration. A warm, sheltered spot against a north- or west-facing wall, fence, pergola or sturdy trellis is ideal, as reflected heat encourages vigorous growth and an extended flowering season. This vine is well suited to temperate and warm-temperate climates and displays excellent heat tolerance once established.

Soil. Trumpet vines are adaptable and will perform in a wide range of soil types, from clay to sandy loams, provided drainage is reasonable. They thrive in fertile, humus-rich soil but are notably tough once established and will tolerate poorer soils. Incorporate compost or a slow-release fertiliser at planting time to encourage strong establishment and vigorous early growth.

Care

Watering. Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a deep and extensive root system. Once established, Campsis × tagliabuana is moderately drought tolerant, though supplemental watering during prolonged dry spells will maintain vigour and prolong flowering. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root stress.

Fertilising. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new growth begins to encourage strong shoots and an abundance of flowers. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilisers, which can promote lush foliage at the expense of flowering.

Pruning. As flowers are produced on the current season's growth, 'Ebony and Red' responds very well to hard pruning. Cut all stems back to within a few buds of the main framework in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. This keeps the vine tidy, within its allotted space and stimulates strong flowering shoots. Throughout the growing season, remove spent flower clusters to encourage further blooming and cut back any wayward shoots as needed to maintain shape. Aerial rootlets can grip surfaces firmly, so consider the placement of the vine carefully before planting.
