Campsis grandiflora, commonly known as Chinese trumpet vine, is a spectacular deciduous climber prized for its extravagant display of large, flared trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of deep orange and scarlet. Produced in generous clusters from midsummer through to early autumn, the blooms are irresistible to nectar-feeding birds and pollinators alike. With its bold, pinnate foliage and vigorous twining stems, this is a plant that brings genuine drama to any garden structure, wall or fence it is given to climb.

Growing conditions

Position. Chinese trumpet vine thrives in a warm, sheltered position in full sun. A south- or west-facing wall is ideal, as the reflected heat encourages the richest flowering and helps ripen the season's growth. In cooler or more exposed gardens, choosing the warmest microclimate available will make a significant difference to performance.

Soil. Campsis grandiflora is adaptable to most well-drained soils, including moderately fertile loams and sandy soils. It does not demand rich conditions — overly fertile soil tends to promote lush leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Good drainage is essential, as the roots will not tolerate prolonged waterlogging.

Care

Watering and feeding. Water regularly during the first season to help the plant establish a strong root system. Once settled, Chinese trumpet vine is reasonably drought tolerant during dry spells. A light application of a balanced fertiliser in spring can support healthy growth, but avoid high-nitrogen feeds which suppress flowering.

Support. Although Campsis grandiflora produces aerial rootlets that allow it to cling to rough surfaces, the stems benefit greatly from the guidance of wires, a trellis or a sturdy pergola framework, particularly when young. Ensure any supporting structure is robust, as a mature plant can become quite heavy over time.

Pruning. Pruning is straightforward and best carried out in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Cut back all the previous season's lateral shoots to within two or three buds of the main framework. This hard annual spur-pruning keeps the plant tidy, encourages strong new flowering shoots, and prevents the base from becoming an unmanageable tangle of woody stems. Remove any dead, damaged or congested growth at the same time.

Winter care. In colder regions, young plants may benefit from a protective mulch over the root zone during the first few winters. Established specimens are hardier, though late frosts can occasionally damage emerging growth in spring — no lasting harm is usually done and new shoots quickly follow.
