Box Root Ball Hedging Pre-Orders Now Open

Premium Instant Evergreen Hedging – Available October to March

Box (Buxus sempervirens) root ball hedging is the ideal choice for creating formal borders, elegant parterres and classic low hedges. Field-grown for many years before being carefully lifted with an intact root ball, these mature plants provide immediate structure and exceptional value compared to large container-grown specimens.

Available only during the dormant season, October to March, root ball Box offers the perfect opportunity to establish a mature hedge at a significantly lower cost.

Why Pre-Order Your Box Hedging?

Our Box rootballs are lifted fresh from the field during the dormant season, with the highest quality plants available from the first lifts.

By pre-ordering now, you'll benefit from:

  • ✔ Priority access to the freshest field-grown plants
  • ✔ First choice of sizes before stocks become limited
  • ✔ Peace of mind knowing your plants are reserved
  • ✔ Exclusive pre-order offers available before the season begins

Box is one of our most popular hedging plants, and larger grades often sell out early.

Why Choose Root Ball Box?

Field-grown Box develops naturally in open ground for several years before lifting. This produces dense, well-branched plants with strong root systems that establish well when planted correctly.

Compared to large pot-grown Box, root ball plants offer:

  • Larger plants for a lower price
  • Dense, mature growth
  • Excellent value for formal gardens
  • Freshly lifted stock during the dormant season

Ideal Uses for Box Hedging

Box remains one of Britain's most popular evergreen hedging plants thanks to its versatility and timeless appearance.

Perfect for:

  • Formal garden borders
  • Knot gardens
  • Parterre gardens
  • Low evergreen hedging
  • Path edging
  • Kitchen gardens
  • Topiary projects

Its naturally compact growth and small evergreen leaves make it one of the easiest hedging plants to maintain.

Planting Root Ball Box Hedging

Root ball Box should be planted as soon as possible after delivery.

1. Prepare the Ground

Remove weeds and dig a trench or planting holes wider than the rootball. Improve heavy soils with organic matter where appropriate.

2. Position the Plant

Place the rootball so the top sits level with the surrounding soil. Avoid planting too deeply, as this can affect establishment.

3. Leave the Hessian On

Do not remove the hessian or wire basket. These are designed to hold the rootball together during planting and will naturally break down over time while allowing roots to grow through.

4. Backfill and Firm

Backfill using the excavated soil, gently firm around the rootball and water thoroughly.

Soil and Position

Box thrives in:

  • Well-drained soil
  • Sun or partial shade
  • Sheltered or exposed locations

Avoid areas where water regularly sits around the roots during winter.

Aftercare

Good aftercare is essential during the first growing season.

We recommend:

  • Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
  • Continue watering regularly during dry weather, particularly throughout the first spring and summer.
  • Apply a mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Keep the planting area free from grass and weed competition.
  • Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring if required.

Trimming Box Hedging

Box responds exceptionally well to pruning.

For a crisp, formal finish:

  • Trim once or twice each year.
  • The main trimming period is between late May and early September.
  • Avoid trimming during very hot weather or periods of drought.

Regular light trimming encourages dense, compact growth.

Box Root Ball Hedging FAQs

When is root ball Box available?

Root ball Box is available from October through to March, while plants remain dormant.

Should I remove the hessian?

No. Leave both the hessian and any wire basket intact. They are designed to naturally decompose after planting.

Can root ball Box be planted in winter?

Yes. Winter is the ideal planting period, provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.

Is root ball Box guaranteed?

As root ball plants are freshly lifted from the field, successful establishment depends on correct planting, soil conditions and aftercare. For this reason, root ball Box is supplied without guarantee.
