Box Bare Root Hedging 2026 Pre-Orders Now Open

Traditional Evergreen Box Hedging – Available November to March

Box (Buxus sempervirens) has been the classic choice for formal hedging in British gardens for centuries. With its naturally compact habit, small evergreen leaves and excellent response to clipping, it creates beautifully defined borders, parterres and low hedges that look elegant throughout the year.

Our bare root Box is field-grown and lifted during the dormant season without soil around the roots, making it a highly economical way to establish a traditional Box hedge.

Available exclusively from November to March, bare root Box offers exceptional value for winter planting projects.

Why Pre-Order Your Bare Root Box?

Our bare root Box is lifted fresh from the field during the dormant season, with the highest quality plants available from the first lifting of the season.

By pre-ordering now, you'll benefit from:

  • ✔ Priority access to freshly lifted field-grown plants
  • ✔ The widest choice of sizes
  • ✔ Guaranteed availability before peak planting season
  • ✔ Exclusive pre-order offers before lifting begins

Bare root plants are only available for a short period each year, and demand is always highest early in the season.

Why Choose Bare Root Box?

Bare root Box offers one of the most economical ways to establish a formal evergreen hedge.

Because the plants are lifted while dormant, they transplant extremely well and begin producing new roots as soil temperatures rise in spring.

Benefits include:

  • Excellent value for money
  • Fresh field-grown plants
  • Easy to handle and plant
  • Reliable winter establishment
  • Ideal for long formal borders
  • Lower transport costs and reduced environmental impact

When planted correctly, bare root Box establishes quickly and develops into a dense, long-lasting hedge.

Why Choose Box Hedging?

Box remains one of Britain's most popular formal hedging plants thanks to its neat appearance and versatility.

It offers:

  • Small evergreen foliage
  • Naturally compact growth
  • Excellent for formal gardens
  • Perfect for low borders and edging
  • Ideal for parterre and knot gardens
  • Outstanding response to clipping
  • Easy to maintain
  • Long-lived and attractive throughout the year

Its naturally slow growth means less maintenance while still providing a crisp, elegant finish.

Planting Bare Root Box

Bare root plants should be planted as soon as possible after delivery.

1. Protect the Roots

Never allow the roots to dry out. If planting is delayed, temporarily heel the plants into loose soil or cover the roots with damp material until you're ready to plant.

2. Prepare the Ground

Dig a planting trench or individual holes wide enough to spread the roots naturally and loosen the surrounding soil.

3. Plant at the Correct Depth

Plant each Box hedge plant at the same depth it was previously growing, ensuring the roots are spread out evenly beneath the soil.

4. Backfill

Refill using the excavated soil, gently firm around the roots and water thoroughly to settle the soil.

Soil and Position

Box performs best in fertile, well-drained soils.

Suitable for:

  • Chalk
  • Loam
  • Clay with good drainage
  • Sandy soils improved with organic matter

It thrives in:

  • Full sun
  • Partial shade
  • Sheltered gardens

Avoid planting into permanently waterlogged ground.

Aftercare

Good aftercare during the first growing season is essential.

We recommend:

  • Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
  • Continue watering during dry periods throughout spring and summer.
  • Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Keep grass and weeds clear around the plants.
  • Avoid allowing the roots to dry out during establishment.

The first growing season is when the plants establish their new root systems, making consistent watering particularly important.

Pruning Box Hedging

Box responds exceptionally well to clipping and is one of the easiest formal hedges to maintain.

For best results:

  • Trim once or twice each year.
  • The main trimming period is between late May and early September.
  • Avoid clipping during periods of very hot or dry weather.

Regular light trimming encourages dense, compact growth.
