Most birches are characterised by distinctive peeling bark which has a variety of textures and shades of colour, the appearance of the bark often is the feature that gives the species its common names.
Birch have light green leaves that are roughly triangular in shape with single or double serrated edges turning bright yellow in early autumn before falling off in late autumn/winter and coming back the following spring. It has catkins that appear from April to May.
Birches are fast-growing and are usually medium-sized trees, they will need room to grow either as a standalone feature in the garden where you can appreciate the bark or at the back of the border with other complimentary plants. Birch groves are also coming into fashion and if you have the space can make a wonderful feature, especially if you under light them for those dark winter nights!
Most birches need moist soil, especially when young and establishing themselves.
They are adaptable trees and generally tolerant of exposed and windy sites, dry or wet conditions and even occasional water-logging. Full sun or light dappled shade.
Water regularly during dry spells, especially when the trees are newly planted. Once established, they won’t require as much watering.
Lightly prune birch trees, this helps support healthy growth and appearance of the tree, best time is late summer to early autumn to prevent the tree from bleeding less sap, also prevents any pests and diseases.
Newly planted trees prefer a seaweed-based feed as the supports growth in the roots. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Adding mulch around the base can help retain moisture and improve soil quality.
Look for white dusty coating on the foliage. Treat by managing the soil, making sure water drains through and watering through dry periods, do not over feed especially with nitrogen
This can be caused by rabbits, deers and squirrels damaging the young bark, use tree quards especially on the younger trees
