Viburnum Plicatum Lanarth

Viburnum plicatum 'Lanarth' – The Layered Viburnum with Striking White Lacecap Blooms

Viburnum plicatum 'Lanarth' is a striking, deciduous shrub known for its distinctive tiered branching, elegant white lacecap flowers, and bold presence in the landscape. Unlike the rounded blooms of the 'Roseum' type, 'Lanarth' features flat-topped flower clusters arranged in horizontal layers, giving the plant a uniquely architectural look. Perfect for adding form, structure, and seasonal beauty to the garden, this Japanese viburnum is especially eye-catching in spring, when it bursts into bloom with abundant, snow-white flowers.

Why Grow Viburnum plicatum 'Lanarth'?

Spectacular Lacecap Flowers – In late spring to early summer, 'Lanarth' is covered with large, lacecap-style white flowers, which sit neatly along the horizontally layered branches. These blooms attract pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, while offering a refined, elegant floral display.

Architectural Branching – This variety is well-known for its distinctive, tiered habit, with wide, horizontal branches that give it a dramatic, layered silhouette. It makes a stunning focal point in borders or woodland gardens.

Attractive Foliage – The fresh green, pleated leaves provide texture and form during the growing season. In autumn, the foliage turns a rich red to purple, adding brilliant seasonal color before the leaves fall.

Reliable & Low Maintenance – Once established, Viburnum plicatum 'Lanarth' is a reliable and easy-to-grow shrub, resistant to most pests and diseases. It thrives in a variety of soils and garden situations with minimal upkeep.

Height of Plant

Viburnum plicatum 'Lanarth' typically grows to around 1.5–2 meters tall (5–6.5 feet) and can spread up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) wide. Its broad, spreading form makes it ideal for foundation planting, feature beds, or as a backdrop in mixed borders.

Where to Site Your Viburnum plicatum 'Lanarth'

  • Feature or specimen shrub, where its tiered branches and white blooms can be fully appreciated.

  • Woodland gardens, where it complements ferns, hostas, and other shade-loving plants.

  • Mixed borders, providing structural interest, texture, and long-lasting color.

  • Informal hedging or screens, offering seasonal interest and natural form.

How to Grow and Care for Your Viburnum plicatum 'Lanarth'

Soil – Prefers moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. It performs best in loamy or slightly acidic soils but is tolerant of a range of conditions, provided the drainage is good.

Light – Grows well in full sun to partial shade. In sunnier spots, you'll get more prolific flowering, but it also thrives in light shade, especially in warmer climates.

Watering – Water regularly during the establishment period and during prolonged dry spells. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant, though consistent moisture will ensure the best flowering and growth.

Maintenance:

  • Pruning – Minimal pruning is required. If shaping is needed, prune lightly immediately after flowering to preserve the next season’s buds. Avoid hard pruning unless rejuvenating an older plant.

  • Feeding – Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to promote strong growth and flowering.

  • Mulching – A mulch of organic matter in spring helps retain moisture and enrich the soil.

  • Pest & Disease Resistance – Generally resistant to most pests and diseases, though occasional aphids or mildew may appear in stressed plants.

  • Cold Hardy – Fully hardy, withstanding harsh winter temperatures and late frosts.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Viburnum plicatum 'Lanarth' looks beautiful paired with spring bulbs like tulips and alliums, or perennials such as aquilegia, brunnera, and pulmonaria. Its layered structure contrasts well with upright forms like delphiniums, or with grasses for a more modern look.

In woodland gardens, combine it with Japanese maples, rhododendrons, and ferns for a serene, textural planting. It also pairs well with other viburnums, hydrangeas, or cornus for extended seasonal interest.

With its elegant, layered branching, lacy white flowers, and brilliant autumn foliage, Viburnum plicatum 'Lanarth' offers four-season interest and timeless charm. Whether used as a specimen shrub or part of a mixed planting, it brings structure, beauty, and wildlife value to any garden space.
