Loropetalum chinense ‘Black Pearl’

Loropetalum chinense ‘Black Pearl’ – Dramatic Foliage & Elegant Blooms for Year-Round Interest

Loropetalum chinense ‘Black Pearl’ is a striking evergreen shrub known for its deep purple-black foliage and vibrant pink, fringe-like flowers. This eye-catching plant provides seasonal contrast and year-round colour, making it perfect for borders, containers, and specimen planting. With its graceful arching branches and compact, dense habit, ‘Black Pearl’ adds a luxurious, contemporary touch to any garden.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

In spring, masses of bright pink, spidery flowers emerge, standing out against the rich, dark purple foliage. These blooms continue sporadically through summer and autumn, adding long-lasting floral interest. The evergreen leaves retain their deep colour year-round, intensifying in the cooler months of autumn and winter, creating a dramatic garden presence even in the colder seasons.

Structure & Form

Loropetalum ‘Black Pearl’ forms a bushy, spreading shrub, reaching 1.5–2m in height with a similar spread. Its slightly weeping branches create a soft, elegant silhouette, while the deep purple-black leaves provide a stunning contrast to green foliage plants. This naturally compact and dense variety requires minimal pruning, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners seeking effortless beauty.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

This versatile Loropetalum is ideal for:

  • Borders & beds, adding a rich contrast against green-leaved plants.

  • Specimen planting, creating a striking focal point in the garden.

  • Container displays, bringing colour and texture to patios and terraces.

  • Informal hedging, offering structure with a unique colour palette.

  • Urban & courtyard gardens, as it thrives in smaller spaces.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, with the deepest foliage colour in sunnier spots.

  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil, but adapts to various soil types.

  • Hardiness: Hardy in mild climates, with some protection needed in severe frost.

  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance; requires only light pruning after flowering to shape. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and easy to care for.

Why Choose Loropetalum chinense ‘Black Pearl’?

  • Unique deep purple-black foliage, adding drama and contrast.

  • Vibrant pink, fringe-like flowers, blooming over a long season.

  • Evergreen & compact, ensuring year-round interest.

  • Low-maintenance & versatile, suitable for a variety of garden styles.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Loropetalum ‘Black Pearl’ pairs beautifully with:

  • Acer palmatum (Japanese Maple) for a stunning foliage contrast.

  • Camellias & Rhododendrons to complement acidic soil conditions.

  • Grasses & Heuchera for a bold, contemporary mix.
