Care
Establishment and watering. Water regularly during the first growing season to help the root system establish. Once settled in, Aucuba japonica is notably drought tolerant and requires little supplementary watering except during extended dry spells. An annual mulch of organic matter applied around the base in spring will help retain moisture and feed the plant naturally.
Feeding. Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring to encourage vigorous, healthy foliage. Avoid over-feeding, which can result in lush but weak growth. Container-grown specimens will benefit from regular liquid feeding throughout the growing season.
Pruning. Japanese Laurel requires minimal pruning and is best left to develop its natural form. If reshaping or size control is needed, prune in mid to late spring using secateurs rather than shears, cutting stems back to a healthy leaf node to avoid unsightly browning of cut leaves. Remove any frost-damaged, dead, or crossing stems at the same time. The plant responds well to harder renovation pruning if an older specimen becomes overgrown.
Berries. To ensure berry production on female plants, plant at least one male Aucuba japonica nearby for pollination. Many mixed plantings and hedges will naturally include both sexes, but it is worth checking when purchasing if berry display is a priority.
