Beech Root Ball Hedging (Green & Copper) Pre-Orders Now Open

Premium Field-Grown Beech Hedging – Available October to March

Beech hedging remains one of Britain's most elegant and popular native hedges. Whether you choose the fresh green foliage of Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) or the rich purple tones of Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea'), root ball Beech provides an outstanding way to create an instant, formal hedge.

Our Beech rootballs are field-grown for several years before being carefully lifted during the dormant season with an intact ball of soil. This produces mature, high-quality plants that establish beautifully while offering exceptional value compared to large container-grown specimens.

Available exclusively between October and March, root ball Beech is the ideal choice for premium hedging projects.

Why Pre-Order Your Beech Hedging?

Root ball Beech is lifted fresh from the field each autumn, and the finest plants are always reserved first.

By pre-ordering now, you'll benefit from:

  • ✔ Priority access to freshly lifted field-grown plants
  • ✔ First choice of sizes and grades
  • ✔ Guaranteed availability for autumn planting
  • ✔ Exclusive pre-order offers before the season begins

Larger grades are produced in limited numbers and often sell out early in the season.

Green Beech or Copper Beech?

Both varieties share the same excellent growth habit and hedge performance.

Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica)

A classic British native hedge with vibrant green spring foliage that turns rich golden bronze during autumn before retaining much of its dried foliage throughout winter.

Ideal for:

  • Traditional country gardens
  • Formal boundaries
  • Wildlife-friendly hedging
  • Large estates and parkland

Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea')

Copper Beech produces striking deep purple foliage throughout spring and summer before developing rich copper and bronze autumn colours.

Perfect for:

  • Statement hedges
  • Formal gardens
  • Contemporary landscapes
  • Feature boundary planting

Why Choose Root Ball Beech?

Field-grown Beech develops naturally over many years, producing dense branching and a strong fibrous root system before lifting.

Compared to container-grown plants, root ball Beech offers:

  • Larger plants for a lower price
  • Outstanding value for mature hedging
  • Fresh field-grown stock
  • Excellent establishment when planted correctly
  • Instant impact from day one

Why Choose Beech Hedging?

Beech has remained one of Britain's favourite hedging plants for generations thanks to its beauty and versatility.

Benefits include:

  • Beautiful seasonal colour
  • Retains much of its copper foliage through winter
  • Dense, formal appearance
  • Excellent for privacy and screening
  • Easy to clip and maintain
  • Long-lived and extremely hardy
  • Supports wildlife

Although Beech is deciduous, the retained winter leaves continue to provide excellent screening until fresh spring growth appears.

Planting Root Ball Beech

Root ball Beech should be planted as soon as possible after delivery.

1. Prepare the Ground

Dig a trench or individual planting holes wider than each rootball and loosen the surrounding soil.

2. Position Correctly

Plant so the top of the rootball sits level with the surrounding soil. Avoid planting too deeply.

3. Leave the Hessian On

Do not remove the hessian or wire basket. These hold the rootball together during planting and naturally break down while allowing new roots to grow through.

4. Backfill

Backfill using the excavated soil, gently firm around the rootball and water thoroughly.

Soil and Position

Beech performs best in:

  • Well-drained soils
  • Chalk
  • Loam
  • Clay (provided drainage is reasonable)

It thrives in:

  • Full sun
  • Partial shade
  • Sheltered gardens
  • Exposed sites

Avoid permanently waterlogged ground.

Aftercare

Good aftercare is essential during the first growing season.

We recommend:

  • Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
  • Continue deep watering during dry weather throughout the first spring and summer.
  • Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture.
  • Keep grass and weeds clear of the root zone.
  • Stake larger specimens if required to prevent wind rock.

Pruning Beech Hedging

Beech responds exceptionally well to clipping and forms one of the finest formal hedges.

For best results:

  • Carry out the main trim during late summer.
  • Young hedges may benefit from a light formative trim in early summer.
  • Regular trimming encourages dense branching from the base upwards.

Beech Root Ball Hedging FAQs

When is root ball Beech available?

Root ball Beech is available between October and March, while plants remain dormant.

Which is better – Green or Copper Beech?

Both establish equally well. Green Beech offers a classic natural appearance, while Copper Beech provides dramatic purple foliage throughout the growing season.

Should I remove the hessian?

No. Leave both the hessian and wire basket intact. They naturally decompose after planting while helping keep the rootball together during establishment.

Can I plant Beech in winter?

Yes. Winter is the ideal planting season, provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.

Is root ball Beech guaranteed?

Root ball plants are freshly lifted from the field and rely on correct planting and aftercare. Because establishment depends on factors such as soil conditions, weather and watering, root ball hedging is supplied without guarantee.
