Beech Bare Root Hedging (Green & Copper) 2026 Pre-Orders Now Open

Traditional Native Hedging – Available November to March

Beech is one of Britain's most iconic hedging plants, admired for its elegant appearance, year-round structure and beautiful seasonal colour. Whether you choose the fresh green foliage of Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) or the rich purple tones of Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea'), bare root Beech provides one of the most economical ways to establish a beautiful, long-lasting hedge.

Our bare root Beech is field-grown and lifted during the dormant season without soil around the roots, making it ideal for winter planting while offering exceptional value for both domestic and commercial projects.

Available exclusively from November to March, bare root Beech remains one of the UK's most popular hedging choices.

Why Pre-Order Your Bare Root Beech?

Our Beech hedging is lifted fresh from the field during the dormant season, with the finest plants available from the first lifting of the season.

By pre-ordering now, you'll benefit from:

  • ✔ Priority access to freshly lifted field-grown plants
  • ✔ The widest choice of sizes and quantities
  • ✔ Guaranteed availability before peak planting season
  • ✔ Exclusive pre-order offers before lifting begins

Bare root hedging is only available for a limited period each year, and popular sizes often sell out early.

Why Choose Bare Root Beech?

Bare root Beech offers exceptional value, making it the preferred choice for planting longer hedge runs and larger landscaping projects.

Because the plants are lifted while dormant, they establish extremely well when planted during winter, producing new roots before spring growth begins.

Benefits include:

  • Excellent value for money
  • Fresh field-grown plants
  • Reliable winter establishment
  • Easy to transport and plant
  • Ideal for long hedge lines
  • Lower environmental impact than container-grown plants

With the correct planting and aftercare, Beech quickly develops into a dense, attractive hedge.

Green Beech or Copper Beech?

Both varieties create beautiful hedges with excellent structure and seasonal interest.

Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica)

A traditional British favourite with fresh green foliage in spring and summer that turns rich golden bronze in autumn before much of the foliage is retained throughout winter.

Ideal for:

  • Country gardens
  • Formal boundaries
  • Wildlife-friendly planting
  • Traditional landscapes

Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea')

Copper Beech produces striking purple foliage throughout the growing season before developing rich copper and bronze tones during autumn.

Perfect for:

  • Formal gardens
  • Statement hedges
  • Contemporary landscapes
  • Feature boundaries

Both varieties naturally retain many of their dry leaves throughout winter, providing valuable privacy until fresh spring growth appears.

Planting Bare Root Beech

Bare root Beech should be planted as soon as possible after delivery.

1. Protect the Roots

Never allow the roots to dry out. If planting is delayed, temporarily heel the plants into loose soil or keep the roots covered with damp material.

2. Prepare the Ground

Dig a planting trench or individual holes wide enough to spread the roots naturally and loosen the surrounding soil.

3. Plant at the Correct Depth

Plant each hedge plant at the same depth it was previously growing, ensuring the roots are spread evenly and not bent upwards.

4. Backfill

Refill using the excavated soil, gently firm around the roots and water thoroughly.

Soil and Position

Beech performs best in fertile, well-drained soil.

Suitable for:

  • Chalk
  • Loam
  • Sandy soils
  • Well-drained clay

It thrives in:

  • Full sun
  • Partial shade
  • Sheltered gardens
  • Exposed locations

Avoid permanently waterlogged ground.

Aftercare

Good aftercare during the first growing season is essential for successful establishment.

We recommend:

  • Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
  • Continue watering during dry periods throughout spring and summer.
  • Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Keep grass and weeds clear around the plants.
  • Avoid allowing the roots to dry out during establishment.

Consistent watering during the first growing season will help the plants establish quickly and produce strong new growth.

Pruning Beech Hedging

Beech responds exceptionally well to clipping and forms one of the finest formal hedges.

For best results:

  • Trim once each year during late summer.
  • Young hedges may benefit from a light formative trim during early summer.
  • Regular trimming encourages dense growth from the base upwards.

Beech Bare Root Hedging FAQs

When is bare root Beech available?

Bare root Beech is available between November and March, while the plants remain dormant.

Which should I choose – Green or Copper Beech?

  • Green Beech offers a traditional natural appearance with vibrant green summer foliage.
  • Copper Beech provides striking purple foliage throughout the growing season for a more dramatic hedge.

Both varieties establish equally well and retain much of their copper-coloured foliage throughout winter.

Can bare root Beech be planted in winter?

Yes. Winter is the ideal planting season, provided the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.

How quickly should I plant bare root Beech?

As soon as possible after delivery. If planting is delayed, keep the roots moist and protected from drying out.

Is bare root Beech guaranteed?

Bare root plants are supplied during dormancy and rely on correct planting, suitable soil conditions and good aftercare for successful establishment. Because factors such as weather, watering and soil conditions are outside our control, bare root hedging is supplied without guarantee.
