View full detailsBare root hedging refers to hedge plants supplied without soil around their roots during the dormant season. This traditional method of supply is ideal for planting hedges between late autumn and early spring, offering excellent value and reliable establishment when planted correctly.
Bare root hedge plants are lifted from the field while dormant and supplied without pots or compost. Because they are not actively growing, they establish well when planted during the winter months and quickly put down roots as conditions warm.
Bare root hedging is typically available from November through to March, depending on weather conditions. Planting during this window allows roots to establish before spring growth begins.
Bare root hedging is chosen for value and scale, while pot-grown hedges are available year-round and suit smaller projects. Both establish well when planted correctly, but bare root remains the preferred option for winter hedge planting.
Always plant bare root hedging promptly on delivery. If planting is delayed, keep roots moist and sheltered from frost and drying winds.
Many native and deciduous hedge plants are supplied bare root during the winter season. You can explore suitable options within our Native Hedging and Deciduous Hedging collections.
