Beech Hedging Copper

Fagus sylvatica purpurea – Copper Beech Hedging 80/100cm Bare Root

Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica purpurea) is a superb hedging plant, valued for its rich leaf colour and elegant, formal presence. In spring, fresh young leaves unfurl in a glowing purple, deepening to lustrous dark copper in summer. Autumn brings fiery russet and bronze shades, with many leaves clinging to the branches through winter to provide screening and structure.

This variety offers the same dense, easily clipped habit as common green beech but with the added drama of purple-toned foliage. It is perfect for formal hedges, feature boundaries, or adding a touch of colour contrast to mixed planting. Thriving in well-drained soils and tolerating partial shade, Copper Beech remains a favourite for gardens and landscapes alike.

Why Choose Copper Beech Hedging?

  • Seasonal Drama – Purple foliage in spring/summer, copper autumn tones, and winter leaf retention.

  • Refined Appearance – A colourful alternative to green beech.

  • Hardy & Adaptable – Grows well in most well-drained soils.

  • Easy to Maintain – Clips neatly into formal hedging.

Planting & Care Guide

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade (best colour in sun).

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soils; avoid waterlogged ground.

  • Planting Distance: 4–5 plants per metre in a single row, or 6–8 per metre in a staggered double row for density.

  • Watering: Keep moist during establishment.

  • Pruning: Clip in late summer to encourage dense growth and neat form.
