Thuja occidentalis 'Brabant' – The Fast-Growing Evergreen for Privacy and Screening

Thuja occidentalis 'Brabant' is a popular, fast-growing evergreen conifer prized for its dense, pyramidal shape and vibrant green foliage. Known for its quick growth and versatility, it is the go-to choice for privacy hedges, windbreaks, and formal screens. 'Brabant' offers year-round colour, structure, and privacy, making it a perfect addition to residential gardens, landscapes, or commercial properties that require both beauty and function.

Why Grow Thuja occidentalis 'Brabant'?

Fast Growth – One of the quickest-growing conifers, it can add 30–60 cm per year, quickly providing privacy or a screen.

Pyramidal Shape – Its naturally upright, narrow shape requires little pruning to maintain a neat, uniform look, making it ideal for hedging or screening.

Year-Round Green – The dense, vibrant green foliage retains its colour through the winter months, ensuring your garden remains attractive even during colder seasons.

Low Maintenance – Once established, it’s easy to care for and requires minimal pruning or upkeep, making it a great option for busy gardeners.

Cold Hardy – Highly resilient, 'Brabant' thrives in colder climates and can withstand winter winds and heavy snow without losing its shape.

Height of Plant

Thuja occidentalis 'Brabant' typically grows to a height of 3–5 meters (10–16 feet) with a spread of about 1–2 meters (3–6 feet). Its natural pyramidal form provides excellent vertical coverage, and it can be trimmed to maintain a desired height and shape.

Where to Site Your Thuja occidentalis 'Brabant'

This hardy conifer is perfect for a variety of planting situations, including:

  • Privacy hedges or screens, where its dense foliage provides year-round coverage.

  • Windbreaks, protecting gardens, patios, or other outdoor spaces from harsh winds.

  • Borders or property lines, creating a clean and attractive boundary.

  • Formal gardens, where its neat pyramidal shape fits well alongside other structured plantings.

  • Urban or commercial settings, offering quick, dense greenery in areas with limited space.

How to Grow and Care for Your Thuja occidentalis 'Brabant'

Soil – Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Tolerates a wide range of soil types, from sandy to clay, as long as drainage is good.

Light – Thrives in full sun to partial shade. While it will grow in light shade, it will achieve its best growth and colour in sunnier spots.

Watering – Water regularly after planting until the tree is established. Once mature, it is relatively drought-tolerant, though consistent watering helps maintain vibrant growth.

Maintenance:

  • Pruning – Thuja 'Brabant' can be lightly pruned in early spring or late summer to maintain shape or reduce size. It responds well to shaping, but heavy pruning should be avoided to preserve its natural form.

  • Fertilising – Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth, especially if planted in poorer soils.

  • Mulching – A layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, especially in hot or dry periods.

  • Pest & Disease Resistance – Generally free from serious pests or diseases. However, watch for signs of bagworms, scale insects, or fungal diseases like root rot if the plant is overwatered or in poorly-draining soils.

  • Cold Hardy – Fully hardy in colder climates, tolerating temperatures down to -30°C or lower.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Thuja 'Brabant' pairs well with a range of plants, both evergreen and deciduous. It can be combined with other conifers such as Picea (spruces) or Pinus (pines) for a layered, textured screen. It also contrasts beautifully with deciduous plants like hydrangeas, roses, or perennials for a softer edge. If used in a more formal setting, it can be paired with boxwood (Buxus) or lavender for a refined, structured look.

With its rapid growth, sleek pyramidal form, and evergreen appeal, Thuja occidentalis 'Brabant' is the ideal choice for creating privacy, providing shelter, and adding year-round interest to your garden. Whether used for hedging, windbreaks, or as a feature plant, it delivers reliable, attractive results with minimal care.
