Rosmarinus officinalis – Fragrant Evergreen Rosemary for Herb and Mediterranean Gardens
Rosmarinus officinalis, commonly known as Rosemary, is a classic evergreen herb valued for its aromatic foliage, culinary uses, and year-round structure. The narrow, needle-like leaves release a strong, distinctive fragrance when brushed or crushed, bringing both scent and texture to the garden.
In spring and early summer, clusters of small blue flowers appear along the stems, attracting bees and pollinators while adding delicate seasonal colour. The combination of evergreen foliage and soft flowering makes rosemary both ornamental and practical.
Its naturally bushy, upright habit makes it ideal for herb gardens, borders, gravel planting, and containers. It can also be clipped into low hedges or informal shapes, adding structure to Mediterranean-style planting schemes.
Thriving in full sun, rosemary prefers free-draining soil and performs particularly well in dry conditions once established. It is highly drought tolerant and dislikes heavy, waterlogged ground.
Low maintenance and easy to grow, it benefits from light pruning after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage fresh growth.
Fragrant, versatile, and timeless, Rosmarinus officinalis is an essential addition to both ornamental and edible gardens.
