Rhus typhina ‘Dissecta’ – Lace-Like Foliage and Autumn Fire
Rhus typhina ‘Dissecta’, commonly known as the Cutleaf Stag’s Horn Sumach, is a bold yet elegant small tree or large shrub that brings year-round visual interest. Its most distinctive feature is the deeply divided, feather-like leaves, which give the plant a soft, almost tropical texture during the growing season.
In summer, upright spikes of velvety, deep-red fruit form, adding extra colour and structure. As autumn approaches, the foliage bursts into an intense display of flame-red, burnt orange, and golden yellow – one of the most spectacular seasonal changes in the garden.
Its sculptural, antler-like winter branches add an architectural quality, ensuring it remains a point of interest even after the leaves have fallen. Hardy and low-maintenance, ‘Dissecta’ thrives in most soils, preferring full sun for the best autumn colour. It’s particularly effective as a specimen tree in lawns or mixed borders, and also works well in more naturalistic or prairie-style plantings.
