Penstemon 'Hidcote Pink' – Soft Pink Elegance with Months of Cottage Garden Colour

Penstemon 'Hidcote Pink' is a charming semi-evergreen perennial and sub-shrub, beloved for its delicate, soft pink trumpet-shaped flowers and effortlessly graceful habit. Named after the famous Hidcote Manor Garden in the Cotswolds, this classic variety produces generous spires of pale blush blooms with a subtly contrasting white throat, creating an air of refined, timeless beauty. Free-flowering and long-lasting, 'Hidcote Pink' is a cottage garden staple that earns its place in borders, beds, and wildlife gardens from early summer right through to autumn.

Why Grow Penstemon 'Hidcote Pink'?

Soft, Romantic Blooms
Bears an abundance of delicate pale pink, tubular flowers with a clean white throat on upright, arching stems. The gentle colouring blends beautifully with a wide range of companion plants and garden styles.

Exceptionally Long Flowering Season
Flowers generously from June through to October, providing one of the most extended displays of any hardy perennial and ensuring the garden stays colourful well into the autumn months.

Pollinator Magnet
The tubular blooms are irresistible to bees and butterflies, making 'Hidcote Pink' an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly and pollinator gardens.

Semi-Evergreen, Tidy Foliage
Neat, lance-shaped mid-green leaves remain on the plant through much of the year in milder climates, providing structure and ground-level interest even outside the flowering season.

Versatile and Easy to Grow
Hardy, reliable, and undemanding once established, 'Hidcote Pink' suits mixed herbaceous borders, cottage-style planting schemes, and informal gardens with equal success.

Where to Grow Penstemon 'Hidcote Pink'

  • In mixed herbaceous or cottage-style borders as a mid-border statement

  • Planted in drifts for a soft, flowing effect in larger garden spaces

  • In wildlife or pollinator-friendly garden areas

  • In well-drained raised beds or large containers in a sunny spot

  • Combined with salvias, geraniums, alliums, and ornamental grasses for a complementary, long-season display

How to Grow and Care for Penstemon 'Hidcote Pink'

Soil – Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid heavy, waterlogged conditions, particularly over winter, as prolonged wet soil is the most common cause of loss.

Light – Thrives in full sun but will tolerate light, dappled shade. A sunny position encourages the most prolific flowering.

Watering – Water regularly after planting to help establish a strong root system. Once settled, 'Hidcote Pink' is reasonably drought tolerant and requires only moderate watering during dry spells.

Pruning – Deadhead spent flower stems regularly throughout the season to encourage continuous blooming. In late autumn, leave the stems in place to offer some protection to the crown over winter. Cut back hard to just above emerging new growth in early to mid spring.

Feeding – Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring as new growth begins to support strong, healthy flowering stems through the season.

Winter Care – Generally hardy across most of the UK (RHS H4), though in colder or more exposed gardens a generous mulch of bark or garden compost around the base in late autumn will provide valuable root protection. Avoid cutting back hard until spring, as old stems help shield the crown from frost.

Penstemon 'Hidcote Pink' is a truly rewarding garden plant, offering months of soft, elegant colour with minimal fuss. Whether planted as part of a sweeping cottage border or alongside grasses and late-season perennials, its graceful pink blooms and dependable nature make it an enduring favourite for any garden. A plant that simply delivers, season after season.
