Matteuccia struthiopteris (Ostrich Fern)
Elegant, architectural fern for damp or shaded gardens
Matteuccia struthiopteris, also known as the Ostrich Fern, is a striking, hardy deciduous fern prized for its tall, upright fronds that fan out gracefully like ostrich feathers. This bold, architectural plant brings a lush, woodland feel to shaded borders, underplanting, or damp areas of the garden.
In spring, distinctive bright green "fiddleheads" unfurl dramatically before forming a tall, vase-like clump. It spreads slowly via underground rhizomes, making it a great choice for naturalising in moist, shady sites or as a feature in fern or foliage gardens.
