Laurus nobilis thrives in full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of a variety of soil types, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of garden styles. Its dense, evergreen foliage provides year-round privacy, screening, or a backdrop to other plants, while its aromatic leaves can be harvested and dried for use in the kitchen.
Why Grow Laurus nobilis?
Aromatic Foliage – The aromatic, dark green leaves are used in cooking and essential oils, making it both an ornamental and functional plant for the garden.
Evergreen Appeal – Laurus nobilis retains its lush green foliage year-round, providing visual interest and privacy in all seasons, particularly in winter when many other plants are dormant.
Versatile Growth Habit – It can be grown as a small tree, shrub, or even trained into topiary or hedge forms, making it highly adaptable to a variety of garden styles and needs.
Attractive Flowers & Berries – In late spring or early summer, it produces small, yellow-green flowers that develop into dark purple berries, attracting birds and adding seasonal interest.
Hardy & Low Maintenance – Laurus nobilis is hardy in a wide range of climates and is low maintenance once established, making it an ideal plant for both novice and experienced gardeners.
Planting & Care Guide
Position: Prefers full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate some shade, it thrives best in full sun where the foliage will be more lush and aromatic. In colder climates, it can be grown in containers and moved indoors during the winter months.
Soil: Best planted in well-drained, fertile soil. It is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including loamy and sandy soils, but it should be planted in soil that does not retain excessive moisture to prevent root rot.
Watering: Water regularly when newly planted to establish strong roots. Once established, Laurus nobilis is relatively drought-tolerant, requiring less frequent watering. However, it will benefit from occasional watering during dry spells.
Maintenance:
Pruning is minimal, but it can be shaped to maintain a neat, compact form, particularly when grown as a hedge or topiary. Trim back any dead or damaged growth as needed in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, particularly in colder climates. Apply mulch in early spring to protect the roots from freezing temperatures.
Fertilizing is generally not required for Laurus nobilis unless it is growing in poor soil. If needed, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Laurus nobilis pairs beautifully with other Mediterranean or evergreen plants like Lavandula (Lavender), Rosmarinus (Rosemary), or Thymus (Thyme), which share similar growing requirements and add texture, fragrance, and color to the garden. It also complements flowering shrubs like Cistus (Rock Rose) or Buddleja (Butterfly Bush), where its evergreen foliage provides a backdrop for seasonal blooms. In formal gardens, it can be shaped into topiary forms or used as a hedge, adding structure and elegance. For a container garden, Laurus nobilis can be paired with other fragrant herbs or used as a standalone focal point, where its aromatic leaves can be enjoyed up close.
