Jasminum nudiflorum (Winter Jasmine)
Jasminum nudiflorum, commonly known as Winter Jasmine, is a vigorous deciduous climber that brings welcome colour to the garden during the darkest months of the year. From late winter into early spring, its bright golden-yellow flowers appear along bare green stems before the leaves emerge, creating a cheerful display when very little else is in flower.
Easy to grow, hardy and incredibly versatile, Winter Jasmine is perfect for covering walls, fences, banks and slopes or training over trellises and pergolas, providing valuable early-season interest.
Why Grow Jasminum nudiflorum?
Bright Winter Flowers – Produces masses of cheerful golden-yellow flowers from late winter into early spring, bringing colour to the garden when it's needed most.
Early Seasonal Interest – Flowers appear before the foliage, creating a striking display on the plant's bright green stems.
Versatile Growth Habit – Can be grown as a climber when supported or allowed to cascade naturally over walls, banks and raised beds.
Hardy & Reliable – Fully hardy throughout the UK, Winter Jasmine performs well in a wide range of garden conditions and is extremely easy to grow.
Low-Maintenance – Once established, it requires very little attention and provides dependable colour year after year.
Planting & Care Guide
Position: Thrives in full sun or partial shade. A sunny position encourages the heaviest flowering, although it performs well in light shade.
Soil: Grows happily in most fertile, well-drained garden soils, including loam, chalk and clay, provided the ground does not remain waterlogged.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish the roots. Once established, Winter Jasmine is relatively drought tolerant and generally only requires watering during prolonged dry spells.
Maintenance:
- Tie in young stems to supports as they grow.
- Prune immediately after flowering to maintain shape and encourage vigorous new flowering shoots for the following winter.
- Remove any dead, damaged or overcrowded stems.
- Apply a balanced fertiliser or mulch with compost in spring to encourage healthy growth.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Jasminum nudiflorum combines beautifully with other early-flowering shrubs such as Forsythia, Hamamelis (Witch Hazel) and Cornus varieties, creating a spectacular late winter display. It also contrasts wonderfully against evergreen shrubs like Yew, Portuguese Laurel and Skimmia, where its bright yellow flowers stand out vividly. Underplant with spring bulbs such as Snowdrops, Crocus, Narcissus and Hellebores for a garden full of colour before spring fully arrives. Whether trained against a wall, scrambling over a bank or spilling over retaining walls, Winter Jasmine provides outstanding seasonal interest and brightens the garden when little else is flowering.
