Cotoneaster horizontalis - Wall Spray Cotoneaster

A deciduous shrub with a unique herringbone branching pattern that creates striking architectural form. Pink-tinged white flowers appear in early summer, attracting beneficial insects, before giving way to abundant bright red berries that persist into winter.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Fresh green leaves emerge along distinctive fishbone branches
  • Early Summer: Pink-tinged white flowers cover the branches
  • Autumn: Leaves turn brilliant red before falling, revealing berry-laden stems
  • Winter: Bright red berries persist on bare herringbone branches

Key Features

  • Distinctive herringbone branching pattern
  • Fully hardy to -25°C
  • Outstanding autumn colour and berry display
  • Excellent for training against walls and fences
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit

Perfect For

Training against walls and fences, groundcover on banks, rock gardens, front of borders, and wildlife gardens. Self-supporting when grown against walls, making it ideal for covering unsightly surfaces.

Growing Tips

Plant in any well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Adapts to most conditions including poor soils and exposed sites. Minimal pruning required; trim after flowering if needed to maintain shape. Naturally spreads horizontally creating excellent coverage.

Looks Great With

Combines beautifully with climbing roses, Clematis, spring bulbs, Sedum, and ornamental grasses. The autumn berries coordinate with late-flowering Aster and the fiery tones of Acer.

A classic cottage garden plant offering exceptional value with its unique form, wildlife benefits, and stunning seasonal displays.
