Sun-Loving & Versatile – Thrives in full sun and can tolerate a variety of growing conditions, including coastal and urban gardens, offering versatility and beauty in many settings.
Pollinator-Friendly – The small, fragrant flowers that appear in summer attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
Planting & Care Guide
Position – Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. It works well as a specimen tree in large borders, coastal gardens, or even as a focal point in containers.
Soil – Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Cordyline Australis is adaptable to various soil types but performs best in slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
Watering – Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, Cordyline Australis is drought-tolerant and requires little watering.
Maintenance:
- Remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s neat appearance and encourage new growth.
- Prune back any excessive growth in spring to maintain its shape and size.
- Mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect the roots during winter.
- While generally low-maintenance, dividing or replanting is rarely needed, but you can refresh soil around the base every few years for added vitality.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Cordyline Australis pairs beautifully with other tropical or coastal plants like Phormium, Agapanthus, Kangaroo Paw, and Flax. For a bold and striking look, combine with plants that feature silvery foliage such as Lavender, Salvia, or Eryngium, creating a contrast that highlights the Cordyline's dramatic appearance. Additionally, it complements the vibrant colours of Canna Lily, Rudbeckia, or Echinacea, creating a stunning, low-maintenance tropical garden display.
