Azalea 'Homebush' – Semi-Double Rose-Pink Deciduous Azalea

Rhododendron 'Homebush', commonly known as Azalea 'Homebush', is a stunning deciduous azalea celebrated for its tightly packed, semi-double flowers in a rich rose-pink to carmine-pink, borne in neat rounded trusses in late spring. A Knap Hill-Exbury hybrid of upright, open habit, it brings bold seasonal colour and an almost formal elegance to the garden, with the added bonus of warm autumn foliage tints before the leaves fall.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Spectacular rounded clusters of semi-double, rose-pink to carmine blooms appear in abundance before or alongside the emerging foliage.

  • Summer: Fresh mid-green leaves provide an attractive, airy deciduous structure throughout the warmer months.

  • Autumn: Foliage flushes with warm orange, red, and yellow tones before falling, extending the season of interest.

  • Winter: The elegant branching framework adds sculptural interest to the winter garden.

Key Features

  • Distinctive semi-double blooms – Tightly clustered, pompon-like trusses in rich rose-pink to carmine-pink, rarely seen in other azaleas.

  • Deciduous habit – Upright, open growth providing striking seasonal contrast.

  • Superb autumn colour – Warm fiery tones before leaf fall add a second season of visual interest.

  • Award-winning variety – Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) for reliable garden performance.

  • Fully hardy – Robust and long-lived across the UK.

Perfect For

  • Woodland and naturalistic gardens – Thrives in dappled shade beneath trees alongside other acid-loving plants.

  • Borders and beds – Makes a bold, upright specimen or a striking mid-border feature plant.

  • Containers – Can be grown in large pots with ericaceous compost on a patio or terrace.

  • Mixed shrub planting – Excellent for multi-season interest alongside evergreen and flowering shrubs.

Growing Tips

  • Sun/Position: Best in partial shade or dappled sunlight; tolerates more sun if the roots are kept cool and moist. Shelter from harsh winds and late frosts to protect the blooms.

  • Soil: Requires acidic (pH 4.5–6.0), moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, or ericaceous compost in containers.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK.

  • Watering: Water regularly, particularly during dry spells. Use rainwater where possible, especially in hard water areas, to avoid raising soil pH.

  • Feeding & Mulching: Apply a balanced ericaceous fertiliser in spring and mulch annually with pine bark, leafmould, or ericaceous compost to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain soil acidity.

  • Pruning: Little pruning is needed. Remove dead or crossing stems and lightly reshape immediately after flowering if required, as buds for next year's display form shortly afterwards.

Looks Great With

  • Other deciduous azaleas – Combine with yellow, orange, or white Knap Hill varieties for a vibrant late-spring tapestry.

  • Rhododendrons – Evergreen rhododendrons provide a lush backdrop that highlights the vivid rose-pink trusses.

  • Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) – Delicate foliage and autumn colour complement 'Homebush' perfectly across two seasons.

  • Pieris japonica – Striking spring foliage and hanging flowers pair elegantly with the rose-pink blooms.

  • Bluebells and ferns – Underplant with native bluebells or soft ferns for a naturalistic woodland feel.
