Agapanthus ‘Black Jack’ – Dramatic Dark-Stemmed Lily of the Nile with Striking Blue Flowers

Agapanthus ‘Black Jack’ is a bold and elegant perennial known for its deep violet-blue flower heads and striking dark stems. This modern variety combines architectural form with vibrant colour, producing tall stems topped with rounded clusters of trumpet-shaped blooms. Ideal for adding height and drama to borders, containers, and contemporary planting schemes, it provides a long-lasting summer display while remaining easy to grow and low maintenance.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Spring:
Fresh, strap-shaped green leaves emerge, forming neat clumps that create structure in borders and containers.

Summer:
Tall, dark stems rise above the foliage, carrying large, rounded heads of deep blue flowers that bloom from mid to late summer, attracting pollinators.

Autumn:
Foliage remains attractive as flowering fades, maintaining a tidy clump of greenery in the garden.

Winter:
Depending on conditions, foliage may remain semi-evergreen in milder climates, with dormant roots ready to regrow in spring.

Structure & Form

Growth Habit: Clump-forming perennial with upright flowering stems rising above neat mounds of foliage.

Height & Spread: Typically grows 70–90cm tall with a spread of around 40–60cm, making it perfect for borders and containers.

Foliage: Arching, strap-like green leaves that provide a lush base throughout the growing season.

Flowers: Rounded clusters of rich violet-blue trumpet-shaped flowers held on distinctive dark stems.

Stems: Deep purple to near-black stems create a dramatic contrast with the vivid blooms.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

Mixed Borders: Adds height, colour, and structure to perennial borders.

Containers & Patios: Excellent for large pots where the dark stems and vibrant flowers can be appreciated up close.

Coastal & Mediterranean Gardens: Thrives in sunny, free-draining positions.

Pollinator Gardens: Flowers attract bees and other beneficial insects during summer.

Growing Conditions & Care

Position: Best grown in full sun for the strongest flowering and colour.

Soil: Prefers well-drained soil, particularly important in winter to prevent root rot.

Hardiness: Moderately hardy; may benefit from winter protection in colder areas.

Maintenance: Low-maintenance; remove faded flowers and old foliage in early spring.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and dry periods, especially for container-grown plants.

Why Choose Agapanthus ‘Black Jack’?

Striking Dark Stems: Deep purple-black stems provide dramatic contrast with vibrant blue flowers.

Long Summer Flowering: Produces impressive blooms through the height of summer.

Architectural Impact: Tall flower stems create vertical interest in borders and containers.

Low Maintenance: Easy to grow and reliable once established.

Ideal Plant Combinations

Pair with Ornamental Grasses such as Stipa or Pennisetum for a naturalistic planting style.

Combine with Lavender, Salvia, or Nepeta to create a drought-tolerant Mediterranean-style border.

Plant alongside silver-leaved plants like Artemisia or Santolina to highlight the deep blue flowers.
