The Dicksonia antarctica, commonly known as the soft tree fern, is a spectacular and ancient species native to Australia and Tasmania. Renowned for its striking, tropical appearance, it features a fibrous, trunk-like base topped with a crown of large, feathery fronds. Ideal for creating an exotic vibe, these ferns are hardy, low-maintenance, and an excellent choice for gardens in the U.K.

Why Plant Dicksonia Antarctica?

  1. Exotic Beauty: Adds architectural elegance to shaded or semi-shaded gardens.
  2. Hardy: With proper care, it can tolerate frost and thrive in the U.K.'s mild climate.
  3. Wildlife-Friendly: Provides shelter and nesting opportunities for small birds.
  4. Slow-Growing: Requires minimal pruning or maintenance, making it a long-term addition to your garden.

Plant them deep enough to keep them from blowing over. They like humus rich acid soil and partial or full shade.

In dry weather water the top of the trunk and allow the top to fill with water.

In winter, when the fronds have had a frost, cut them off and protect the top of the trunk with a wad of straw & sacking or some other insulation until the following spring.
