A magnificent deciduous climber that brings both floral beauty and architectural presence to shady walls and fences. This self-clinging variety transforms difficult north-facing aspects into stunning features, producing generous displays of fragrant white flowers and offering year-round interest through its attractive foliage, autumn colour and distinctive peeling bark.
In early summer, large flat lace-cap flowerheads up to 25cm across appear, filling the air with sweet fragrance and attracting pollinators. The heart-shaped leaves create lush green coverage before turning beautiful butter yellow in autumn. In winter, the attractive cinnamon-brown peeling bark and branching structure provide excellent architectural interest.
Outstanding for north-facing walls, shady fences and large trees. Ideal for covering unsightly structures in shade. Perfect for woodland gardens and creating vertical interest in difficult areas. Can also be grown as ground cover on banks.
Plant in shade to partial shade in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Self-clings via aerial roots but may need initial support. Slow to establish in first 2-3 years but vigorous thereafter. Water regularly until established. Minimal pruning required, trim after flowering if needed to control size.
Provides excellent backdrop for shade-loving perennials like hostas, ferns and hellebores. Complements other climbing plants like clematis for extended interest. Works well with spring bulbs planted at the base. The white flowers harmonize with blue or white woodland flowers.
A truly outstanding climber for shade that rewards patience with spectacular flowering displays and year-round beauty once established.
