Fatsia japonica – Japanese Aralia

A bold and beautiful evergreen shrub, Fatsia japonica is one of the most reliable plants for bringing genuine architectural drama to shaded garden spaces. Its enormous, glossy, hand-shaped leaves create an instantly exotic, tropical atmosphere, making it a standout choice for gardens where other shrubs may struggle to perform.

Habit & Appearance

Bold, architectural foliage. The deeply lobed, palmate leaves can reach an impressive 40cm or more across, forming a dense, spreading mound of rich, lustrous green. The layered, bushy habit gives Fatsia a sculptural quality that provides strong visual structure throughout the year.

Seasonal flower and berry interest. In autumn, mature plants produce branching clusters of rounded, creamy-white flowerheads held above the foliage on upright stems. These late-season blooms are rich in nectar and highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. They are followed in winter by small clusters of glossy black berries, adding further decorative and wildlife value.

Growing Conditions

Position. Fatsia japonica thrives in partial to full shade and is one of very few shrubs that performs exceptionally well in deeply shaded spots, including north-facing borders, enclosed courtyards, and beneath tree canopies. A sheltered position is preferred, as strong winds and prolonged harsh frost can damage the large leaves. It is notably tolerant of urban pollution and coastal conditions, making it an excellent choice for city and seaside gardens alike.

Soil. Plant in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Fatsia is reasonably adaptable but dislikes waterlogged or excessively dry conditions. Mulching annually helps to retain moisture and protect the roots, particularly in exposed positions.

Care & Pruning

Low maintenance and easy to grow. Once established, Fatsia japonica requires very little attention. Water regularly during the first growing season to encourage a strong root system. Thereafter, it is largely self-sufficient in all but the driest conditions.

Pruning. Little pruning is needed. In spring, remove any leaves that have been damaged by frost or winter weather, cutting back to healthy growth. If the plant outgrows its space, stems can be cut back hard in spring — Fatsia responds well to renovation pruning and will reshoot vigorously.

Hardiness. Hardy throughout most of the UK. In colder or more exposed gardens, providing a sheltered position and an annual mulch over the root zone will offer adequate protection through winter.
